DRIFTED 50 DAYS I
ON SEVEN SEAS
L
PAPtfKTK, Tahiti, Oct. 1. (Ry
Mall.) 'Saved by the hand of God"
is tho way the nine natives compris
ing the crow of the 80-ton schooner
"Oromana" characterize their escape
from death after having drifted help
lessly 50 days on one of the loneliest
bits of ocean In the Seven Seas.
When the wreck of the "Oromana"
was towed into Papeete harbor this
week one of the most remarkable
voyages known in these waters was
completed. The vessel, a two-mast
schooner, owned by natives of Rfma
tara, an Ishtnd about 200 miles south
weHt of Tahiti, left her home port
without carRo bound for the ilund of
Hurutu in the same group where she
was to undergo repairs and take a
cargo of copra for Tahiti.
Two days out she was struck by a
siorm which carried away both her
musts and later her rudder, leaving
her a hopeless derelict.
With never a glimpse of land or
satl to give a rap of hope, the "Oro
mana'1 drifted for "o days. After 15
days the supply of food was gone.
The natives managed to catch a shnrk
with. hook and line. This lasted them
five days. The rest of the time they
had no food. An occasional shower
prevented death from thirst.
Then the "mlraflo" happened. The
mountains of Tahiti ro?e slowly over
tho horizon. Tho shifting sea current
brought them nearer and nearer un
til they wero finally sighted from
rc and ii ivcr buut sent to inv.
them in. They were too weak to
rise to thoii feet but after a few days
ashore all appear to be rapidly recov
ering from their experience.
Tho natives say the hand of God
guided their craft for the previillng
winds in theso latitudes aro from the
northwest, a direction which never
would havo brought them to Tahiti.
