"Wo are going to put Mcdford
over the top if we have to work all
next week" said AV. G. Tait, chair
man ot the United War Work drive
this afternoon. "Over half the coun
ties in the state have reached their
quotas, Portland goes over the top
tomorrow, and we must and will do
the same. Various things have de
layed our work in Jackson county
and if we have to extend the cam
paign beyond Monday to get our
quota we will do it. We are not
going to lay down now. The boys
over there have done their job. Now
we; are going to do ours."
This noon the total subscriptions
In Medford and Jackson county
north approximated $0500, this
leaves over $14,000 to raise in two
days. This places a heavy burden
upon the solicitors but they are all
working tooth and nail, and If the
people do their share, the goal can
be reached. In the country districts
solicitors aro scouring their territor
ies on horseback, the condition of
the roads making motoring Impos
sible. The Victory boys and girls
under County School Supt. Ager are
doing yeoman service. There is not
a slacker among the workers but the
people as a whole are not doing their
share.
The trouble appears to be not so
much that few people subscribe as
that those who do subscribe do not?
give what they should give. A con
certed effort is -being made now to
bring subscriptions up to the proper
amount. If the solicitor has . not
called on you go to your bank and
subscribe. Jf you ean. not get to
your bank call them up and tell
them to charge your account with
the proper amount. The state wor
kers are determined to make Oregon
the first state to go over the top.
This will be impossible unless Med
ford and southern Oregon contribute I
as they have been called upon to con.
tribute.
ADVISES AMENDMENT
OF HO
"In mv judgment, the wnv to amend
a law is by an act o the Jewish! tare
rather than bv interpretation or -;on-structioii
oC a statute," savs Attor
ney General Brown in an opinion to
Attorney C. Jl. Thomas.
Mr. Thomas is attorney for the Tal
ent irrigation district, which is in
convenienced bv having to follow the
provision of the law which requires
irrigation districts to pav their bills
bv having the eountv elerk draw war
rants on the district's funds in the
hands of the eountv treasurer. lie
wanted to know if it would be all
riant for the district to draw a lump
sum of money from tlio eountv treas
urer and use it to cheek against in
pnvinir their bills.
This would be a deviation from the
plain provisions of the law and
brought forth the expression from (lie
attorney general that it is better to
amend the law bv legislative act rath
er than bv interpretation. Ho points
out that the legislature will soon con
vene and then if the irrigation district
law needs amending it can be altered.
