"Privato William J. Pickett, for
merly n member of 112th company,
8th regiment, enrolled in tho marine
corps reservo December 18, 1917. and
roccived his recruit training at Mare
Island, California. At the time of
enrolling ho gnvo his homo address
us Modford. Oregon, nnd that of his
mother as Canvonvillo, Oregon. He
weighed 164 pounds, was 70 inches
high, had brown eves, niibiirw hair,
and B ruddy complexion. Ho joined
tho 112th company March HI. 1018,
nt Galveston, Texas, and on Julv 20,
1018. was transferred to the U. S.
liuval hospital nt New Oreluns. While
serving with this eomunnv Privute'i
Pickett was in the hospital most of
tho time, with some trouble about tho

there will no doubt be many, but
when historv is written the name of
Privato W. J. Pickett. V. 8. Marine
Corps, will not appear. However, his
name will ho foremost in the minds of
inunv Medford citizens for tho many
daring deeds ho did in the Hoguc
river valley.

amazing underground shelter or dug
out eoipped with many luxuries is the
home of tho staff of one Arncricnn
army corps which took a prominent
part in the St. Mihiel fight. It is lit
tle less than an underground city
club, with offices, sleeping niinrtcrs,
baths, restaurants, kitchens, electric
lights, telephone nnd bell boys in the
persons of orderlies and messengers
and mnnv other appurtenances of ho
tel life.
Its occupation hns permitted the
staff of this corps to operate in close
touch with the fighting troops much
more closely behind the lines thnn
such a corps ordinarily ventures,

From the outside the place was so
inconspicuous, standing about two
hundred yards from the rood, that
ninety-nine out of n hundred motor-.

seeing it at all. The one hundredth
would have seen mere ground that

Inside, parallel with the rond ond

since the -Russian collapse Germany
haB been laying the foundations for
commercial conquest of the Baltic
provinces of Courlanwl, Lithuania and
Esthonla. It Is prob-aule that she al
ready has obtained tan economic ad
vantage there that will be difficult to
wrest from her.
A large part of the German cam
paign Is In the hands of the "Eastern
Territories' Noo-Getrman Economic
society." Among the active leaders
of this society are the Prussian and
Imperial ministers, representatives of
the military authorities in the Baltic
provinces, members of the German
reichstag and bankers. Plans have
been adopted for extending credit
tor the work of reconstruction and
economic conquest, und the German
Eastern Bank of Commerce and In
dustry, an institution whose turnover
last year exceeded twenty-six billion
marks, has -planned to devote the
greater Bhare of its activities to work
in the east.
A large number of organizations
for tho study of conditions in the
Baltic provinces and for the "educa
tion of leaders of enterprise" there
have already been formed. The "Ger
man Association for Research in Eas
tern iSurope" is in full action. Direc
tors of the Deutsche Bank are taking
an active part in the work.
Professors at the University of
Berlin have oganized an '.'Institute
for Russian Research," and their ac
tivities extend to financial, commer
cial and Industrial matters. Munich
and JeDa professors will shortly open
a higher institute of learning "for:
the education of leaders of enterprise
In the Eastern territories."
In the Baltic provinces themselves
there are already In operation special
teachers' institutes and schools de
voted to the development of the lands
economic life. All these are, ot
course, supported by Gorman funda
and manned largely by German
scholars and experts in the various
lines of thought and activity.
