LET HIM LIVE
Ik-low III a poem written presum
alily by a young woinnn. It was pack
ed In a box of things sent to a soldier
at tho front. He returned the poem
to his home town to bo published
with a view to trying to discover the
author. The poem has been widely
publiiihcd und commented upon.
As lone as tho flowers their porfumo
give,
So lout; would let the kaiser live.
Llvo and livo for a million years
With nothing to drink lint Belgian
tears;
With nothing to quench his awful
Ihlmt
Hut the suited brine of a Scotch
man's ciiruo.
I would let him llvo on a dinner each
day,
8ervel from a Bllvor on. a golden
try;
Served with things both dainty und
sweet;
Served with everything but things
to eat.
I would make lilm a bed of silken
sheen,
Willi costly linens to lie between.
With covers of down nnd filets of
lace.
And downy pillows piled In place;
Yet when to lis comfort bo would
yield
It would nt in Vc with rot r r the luit

men
Should rover him, similiter hi in.
nr.d then
Ills pillow should cling with rotlen
clay
'!ny from the grave of a soldier boy.
While (lod's slurs their vigils keep,
And while Ihn waves their while
sands sweep,
Ho should never, never, never
sleep.
And I'd build bliu n caMP' ly the sea.
As lovely a castle n ever could be.
Then I'd rhow him a ship from over
tho sea.
As fine a ship ns ever could be,
l.uden wiih water as cool nr.d sweet.
l aden with evervMiilm good In eat.
Yet rcarie docs she tou h tho nil

Than n bet anil hellish mel.cn slid:
Fc.irce he may reach out his civ.t ;
hands
Should chance hi tievn lulo hrdl
And tho he'd wal.bed by Hie wave
swept shore.
Our l.uiit.mla would rise no more.
In ".No Man's l.anil.' where the Irish
Ml,
I'd r-tart the Kaiser a private h'-ll;
I'd n him, slab hiiri give htm g:.s.
And ii iarh wiv-.id I would pour
ground gin;
1 d march him out when brave
boys died:
Out past the la Is he crucified.
l.l the fearful g!on;n of his living
tomb
There is fine thing I'd do before I
as thru
I'd make him sing In a stirring man

" that we can drop tlic i-csoiisibilitic.s wo assumed when
we entered war. We have over two million soldiers over
Hens and two million in America, whose welfare must Ik:
looked after.
For a lonjj lime 1: cot.c, we must maintain an arinv ov
erseas, to iiolice and protect the peoples of distracted war
torn lands, to assist in the establishment of law and order
and in alleviating distress and suffering.
Fighting is still in progress in Russia .and in Siberia
and is apt to continue for souk; time before order is re
stored and the rein of Hie red terror eliminated. Our navy
must he kept busy for months in removing mines and ob
structions from the sea.
Nearly all of our boys now in France must spend the
winter there. They will need tho comforts and adminis
trat ions of the war auxiliary organisations of the various
club houses, comforts and amusements provided and
those in American cantonments will also need them.
To pro vide for these various organizations, a great
drive is now underway to secure the necessary funds. In
stead of seven different drives for seven organizations, all
have been combined in one drive. All are under jurisdic
tion of the war department and all are doing worthy work
for the army and navy.
Lot your contribution bo as large, as possible, knowing
that you are giving in a worthy cause seven worthy
causes. '
THE YELLOW STREAK
THE path of the Herman armies can be traced all over
Ellmiic llr llin till ciinnl.'illo Tiiint- ,,lf ftfria on1 it,l-iri3
,.v. o,,,,,,,,,, iihi.t vi. linn tuiu. iioulo
of destroyed cities and the desert desolation of what once
were fertile regions. No such ruin has been wrought, no
such atrocities committed, no such reign of horror soon on
earth" since the days when tho (lornian barbarians of old
sacked Rome, dest royed civilization and plunged Europe
into t he dark ages.
The (ierman brought nothing but the gospel of brute
force. He devastated the country, enslaved the popula
tions, wasted tho land with a ruthless brutality unteinper
ed by a single consideration of hunianitv. He was en
abled to do this by long and scientific preparation against
me unorganized and unprepared torees ot civilization.
Tho threat of armed might to overwhelm the world event
ually forced the world to organize and overwhelm the bar
barian. -
Witli the strength of the brute usually goes the yellow
streak for pure physical force lacks the finer strength
of moral courage. Tho yellow streak of the Hun was soon
apparent. He fought, in mass formation and overwhelmed,
by superiority of numbers. When he faced a single-handed
combat he threw up his hands and called " Kamarad." He
recklessly bombed enemy cities, but when his own suffered
began to whine. AVhen given a dose of his own poison gas,
ho sought its elimination. "When forced back to his own
frontier, altho his army was in' good condition, rather than
ruu the risk of having his own land invaded, ho raised the
white flag of sjiiTondor and collapsed in fear. His glorified
kaiser fled to save his own hide and now the (iormaiw are
begging for mercy from those to whom they refused all
mercy, for food to avert, famine they themselves caused.
If (lorniany had boon invaded by overwhelming might
how long before the yellow streak would have been appar
ent'? For over four years France and lielgiuni and Serbia
ha ve boon overrun, and never lost courage or shown four
and today they have back their countries with their free
dom guaranteed by tho civilized world and it is the bury
ing brute that quakes with fear, who in his .collapse, has
lost not only his empire but his future along with it.
AVIiat h pitable contrast between invaded but inicoii
iierable I'Yanco, derided as decadent by the (lorinans and
uninvaded but conquered Germany, who bragged of being
a nation of supermen. The former is inspired by the moral
courage of righteousness, the latter by the vellow st reak.
