THE OLD ORDER PASSETH
Tlftf partnership id' "Mo und (iolt" luis been perina
- jii'iitly dissolved. . Tho mad monarch is a fugitive in
fliffht his ifanduisc scheme of conquest and dreams of
world empire a niyiit i; ;.re of the past. The philosophy of
might makes riH-'il has crumbled before the eternal law
of right makes might. 1 he unleashed forces of barbarism
lie prostrate before the martial forces of civilization and
autocracy humbled and crushed by democracy. Tin; path
ot "glory has led but to the grave.
The old order passeth in travail and suffering the now
is born. Ten million of lives, widespread devastation, uni
versal suffering and sorrow is the price paid for the birth
of freedom in continental Europe. "or Ihe death throes of
feudalism, for freeing hiuiianitv from the chains that
shackled progress and enslaved peoples. JJut the price has
not been too great' it the results within reach are achieved.
illiam Jlohenzollern will rank in history as the last of
the feudal monarchs. With him falls for all lime the the
ory of the divine riglit of kings, the enthroned right of the
few to exploit Uu: many. With defeat has come the disil
lusionment of the German people, who intoxicated bv mil
itary success, suffered from megalomania to the extent
that the entire nation became tainted, slavishly followed a
mai.iitc into the abyss of scientitic savagry and lost, her
soul.
Troublous days are ahead for the peoples of central
Europe days of turmoil, struggle and bloodshed, but in
spite of llieni and out of them will come a new Europe
nations of free men with opportunity to work out their
own salvation a they painfully toil up the spiral of prog
ress towards the herhcjod of man.
It has been America's priceless privilege to furnish the
ideals along with the men and the materials that overthrew
the old order and made possible the dawn of the new day.
It is also our privilege as well as duty to aid in the estab
lishment of law and order in the demoralized countries and
assist in the restoration of ruined lauds and to that end our
energies must be expended and above all to see that a
permanent peace based upon .justice to all is established. ,
Philosophers have defined unselfish service as the
source of happiness and our future happiness as a nation
depends upon the service we render the world in the trying
period of reconstruction now at hand.
