i'essiii,r't(i accejit the jiresith'nt's terms, lie avoids ac
cepting anything )ut a disctis.sion of those terms and even
refuses' to' part with Alsace-Lorraine an essential to
peace.
Germany does not want peace on Wilson's terms and
normally does not liroiiose to accept peace on these terms.
The (lerinan armv litis not been crushed. Though driven
out of a portion of Fi'ance and J'.elgium, the army is still a
long way from (lermany, still fighting valliantly, with no
sign of collapse. Peace efforts are a play for time with
winter coming on, for the criminal would escape penalty
for the crime. ' '
The' object of the peace drive is to create dissension
among the allies and to strengthen German morale and
get the Gt rman people's enthusiasm aroused for defend
ing the Fatherland. There has been no democratizing '
the government, no general election. The people have not
been consulted in tiny way. A royal dispiser of democ
racy is chancellor, with the socialist betravoi's of Uussia
in his ministry. The same old German game of diplo
matic duplicity is being played.
Even if the German people wove in control, the situ
ation would not be altered, it is the German people who
have approved the war and who have backed up friglit
fulness. Xot a single expression of regret has come out
of Germany on account of the atrocities committed
inertly the whine of whipped curs now that do font- im
pends. As liisjon Quale has so well set forth in the
Christian Advocate:
"Let us sol down sternly that we ar" at war with the
Germans, not the Junkers, not autocracy, not I'rus.M.ui
ism, not the kaiser (spelled with a smalt 'k'). All that is
camouflage and dangerous, because it obscures the
truth. The German people is what we war with. The
Gorman people is committing the unspeakable horrors
which set the world aghast. The German people is not
and lias not been conducting war. It is and has boon con
ducting murder. Hold fast to that. The 'supreme court
of New York declared (he sinking of the Lusitania an act
of piracy. Piracy is not war. All decencies, honors,
humanities, international agreements, anil laws have been
smashed by them day and night from the first rape of
.Melgitim to now. The new atrocity which appeared this
week was spraying prisoners with burning oil. This is
Germany's most recent est. It makes them laugh so!
"They have violated e.very treaty with the United
States; they have lied from start to finish and to every
body. A treaty was a scrap of paper. This week the
Prussian lords have dishonored a prince who was Am
bassador to Knglaud tit the opening of this war because
he has published the truth saying that neither Prance nor
Kugland wanted war, Germany brought it on; and the
emperor has sustained the action. Ju other words, Ger
many iii .1918 has put to public shame the one map
among them who has told the truth in Germany about
Germany the truth which the whole world knows with
out any confirmation from Germany. .
"Germany has ravished the women of llelgium, Ser
via, K'oiimauia, Poland, Armenia; Germany murdered the
passengers of the Lusitania and struck a medal to cele
brate that German triumph, dating it two days before the
horrible occurrence; Germany lias ruined cathedrals and
cities in sheer wanton fury in such fashion as has not been
done in till the wars waged in Lnrope since the days of the
building of the cathedrals: Germany has poisoned wells,
crucified inhabitants and soldiers, burned people in their
houses, and this by system; Germany hits denatured men
and boys, has wantonly defaced the living and the dying
and the dead. An eye witness tells of seeing women
dead at a table with their tongues nailed to the table and
left to die. Germany has stolen tilings little and big:
playthings from children, finery from women, pictures of
incalculable worth, bank deposits, railroads, factories;
Germany has sunk hospital ships, has bombed hospitals
and Wed Gross camps.
"Germany has disclosed neither decency nor honor
from the day it started the war nor has a single -voice in
Germany to date been lifted up against the orgies of i utli
lessness which turn the soul ick and which constitute the
chief barbarity of history; Germany remains unblushing
and unconscious nf its indecency; Germany's egotism still
struts like a kaiser; and to climax its horrid crimes, Ger
many has inflicted cniipnUory polygamy on the virgins
of its own land."
