Socictv of Swiss bank lias issued estimates sliow-
in"; that the war will have eost by New Year day, j
1919, approximately 217 billion dollars. Aeeurate reports
were not obtainable from Belgium,, Serbia, Rumania
Montenegro, Bulgaria or Turkey, 'but most of these war
expenditures were underwritten by their allies. The total
cost of the first four vears of war totalled 180 billion dol
lars. The figures show the eost of war to be advancing by
leaps and bounds. The 1H1 days of the first four years
of war, ending Julv lil, 1918, eost all belligerents an av
erage of ii12:5,()0(),(ioO a da v. During 1918 the dailv av
erage has been $'2-1-1, ()()(),()( )(). That means tho war is'eost
ing .inore than $10,000,000 an hour and going up every
minute!
Counting the expenses of mobilizing and all war opera
tions, but not ineluding redepintion of the debt nor the
cost of restoring damaged property, the Swiss bank ex
pert exl iniates the direet eost of hostilities as follows:
1914 (5 months) .$10,000,000,000; 191.") (12 months, .$20,
1)00,000,000; 191(i, (12 months), $:!2,000,000,000; 1917, (12
months), $((),( 100,000.000; 1918, (to Julv :?1), $"0,000.000.
000; 1918 (12 mouths,, $89,000,000,000.' Total to Julv 31,
1918, $180,000,000,000. Total (to January, 1, 1919), $217,
000,000,000. France and her allies, excluding the United States, re
ceived $9,000,000,000 i'roni (treat Britain, and the United
States ii) to the end of July, 1918,, had opened to the al
lies a total of $().:79,000,000 of credit.
Four-fifths of the war have been financed by treasury
operations and loans. Such loans aggregate one hundred
and thirty-five billion dollars, or just three-fourths of
what the war has cost all belligerent nntions.
The debts of the warring nations before the war to
talled $2:,vr00,0X).Oi)0. which' four years of war has multi
plied by eight. Besides these colossal costs, there have
lieeii appalling military destructions in the invaded areas,
for which it will require enormous efforts of human en
ergy to recuperate, and some of which are irreparable.
The total area of the war zone is 174,000 square miles, of
which the western theater of the war, in France and Bel
gium, stretches over an area of .10,500 square miles, and
contains over 11,000 cit ies, villages and hamlets, great man
ufacturing and agricultural districts, of which some have
been totally annihilated and some heavily affected. The
estimate by the National Foreign Trade Council of the
war losses, which unfortunately does not go beyond 1910,
is as follows:
Best met ion .of building and industrial machinery in
Belgium, $1,000,000,000, and in France, $700,(X)(),000. The
destruction of agricultural buildings and implements, of
raw materials, of crops and livestock, has been estimated
at a sum of $780,000,000 in Belgium, and $(i80,000,000 in
France. .Roads were destroyed frequently by the retiring
troops and have been seriously damaged by heavy gunfire
and excessive use. The losses from destruction of rail
way bridges, etc., have been estimated in Belgium at $27."),
000.000, and in France at'$:!00,000,()00.
'The losses in Poland estimated at $8.")0,0(X1,000, in Rus
sia, Fast Prussia and Serbia are even more appalling,
while to the already heavy losses in France and Belgium
is being added the systematic destruction of manufactur
ing cities and devastation of occupied territory, entailing
a loss of billions. ;
The greatest loss, however, is in manpower. Tt was
estimated that in the first four years of war the killed or
permanently wounded totalled 1."), 084,000 men. To these
must he added the other millions of non-combatants,
starved, enslaved, maltreated and massacred victims of
"fright fulness" and of war.
And all of this appalling burden of debt and sorrow
has been piled upon humanity by (ierinany in her insane
desire to rule the world crimes for which she now seeks
immunity by peace, but which justice demands that she
be punished.
You can help insure this punishment by Pershing's
men by loaning your dollars to I'ncle Sam by buying lib
crtv bonds.

. Ouo of tho most interesting of tlio
many remailiab'o statements yet
made In connection with Tanlac was
given by .51 ra. Marie J. Howard, who
resides at -Hi'! Vfestlako Ave., North,
Seattle, recently. Mm. Howard has
teen a resident of Seattle for the
tmiit eighteen years, and before her
uiarrlaKO was a trained nurso and a
graduate-or Dellcvue Hospital, New
York. When asked ir she would be
willing for her statement to be pub-li-licd.
she taid, "Yea, indeed, and
you may start it by saving 1 believe
Tanlac has saved my life.
"I have suffered from stomach
trouble and disordered liver and kid
neys Tor five years and had gotten In
such a bad condition, that I honestly
felt like I waa going to die. Every
thing 1 would cat fermented In my
ntomach and tlio ga3 formed by 't
would cause my heart to palpitate so
my breath would almosrt stop. Tlioro
were intense pains nil thru my back
about my liver and kidneys and I
can't begin to tell how I did suffer.
1 had rearrul headaches and was so
nervous I hardly knew what Bleep
was. 1 was often down In bed ror a
week at a time, hardly able to raise
my hand. Then 1 would manage to
stay up for two or three days, but
would have to give up and take to my
bed again. I would often go ror two
or three days without eating a
mouthful of anything. I lost weight
right along and am telling the posi
tive truth when 1 say I was in such
an awful condition that I thought I
was going to die.
"After reading and hearing so
much about Tanlac I bought a bottlo
thinking if it did others so much
good, perhaps it might help me too.
Well, It has not only helped me, but
I have actually gained twenty-five
pounds since I began taking it and
have never felt better in my life. .My
appetite is good and my stomach in
such a splendid condition that I can
hardly eat enough and I don't suffer
a particle afterwards. All my pain
and misery is gone, my kidneys and
liver are acting splendidly and my
nerves are perfectly strong and nor
mal. I sleep every night like a
: child, and don't know what it is to
have a headache. My husband has
also taken Tanlac with wonderful re
sults. In fact, 1 think It has dono
him as much good as It has me, and
wo both, consider It the finest medl
