the allies are more than ever clearly

avert defeat by compromise.
So far the president has dealt only
with the proposal of the German gov
ernment leaving unanswered similar
pleas for peace from Austria-Hungary
and Turkey. There Is no Indi
cation that these allies of Germany
will hear from him until the domin
ant factor In the central alliance
makes another move, unless one or
both of them In the meantime should
plead anew, seeking surrender Inde
pendent of Germany. Turkey al
ready virtually is out of the war and

to the French-Dodge bridge, five
mllos above here on Rogue river, to
inspect It.' Just a few minutes nfter
they left Ed Dutton, our hustling j

them, and on learning their where-1
abouts started post haste after them
and your Eagle Point correspondent
accompanied him, reaching the
bridge almost as soon as they did.
Upon examination they found that1
ono of the posts had rotted off and)
that some of the rest of them were
rotting and Mr. Dutton was ordered
to replace the rotted post.. The ap
proach is said to be six hundred feet
long and is built on piling and the
decision arrived at was that In the
course of the noxt three years the
whole of the piling will have to bp
replaced.
While we were there Mr. Owen
asked how much kicking would be
done ir that bridge was taken down
and carried up the river to where
tho old Hannah ferry used to be.

Harry Hayes came In for dinner. Mr.
Hayes has been out in eastern Ore
gon for the past two years, his came
in some four weeks ago to visit her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Uiley uf
Peyton.
Frank Manning of Peyton, came in
Tuesday evening and spent the night
with us. He left hero a year ago last
December for Wyoming where ho has
been ever since, at tho bedside of his
father, who passed away in Septem
ber last. While he was here he re
newed his subscription to the AVeekly
Mall Tribune.
