An experiment in apple shipping
was begun yesterday by Chief of Po
lice Timothy when he shipped a bar
rel of choice Newtown apples by
freight to his daughter In Clinton,
Iowa. Ho figures that It will take a
month for the apples to reach their
destination nnd hopes that they will
escapo freezes and nrrive In prime
condition.

Regarding the ruling of the war

Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Wells nnd
daughter Doris of Portland, aro here
for a several weeks visit. Mr. Wells
located In Medford SO years ago and
for eight yearB worked as assistant
to Ed Wilkinson in the meat busi
ness. Twenty years ago he left Med
ford, then was located at Gold Hill
for eight years, ami has been In the
meat business in Portland, which
business he has Just sold out. He
plans to take life easy for a while.
Thos. Hoyd, the well known Apple
gate rancher, has been spending the
week in Medford on business.
A poultry culling demonstration
was conducted at Ashland this fore
noon by Professors I'pson and Brew
ster of Corvallls and County Agricul
tural Agent Cate. Another demon
stration will be held tomorrow at the
Louis olver farm at Phoenix. The
general public is Invited to attend.
Mrs. W. P. Davis of San Francisco,
who was here to attend the funeral
of her sister. Mrs. Clay Walker, oft
