WASHINGTON, Oct. 8. Charges
that thS United States Brewers' asso
ciation anil individual-members have
secretly financed newspapers in the
Interest of the liquor traffic, contrib
uted to the National German-American
Alliance, been convicted of cor
rupt practices and improperly Influ
enced state and national legislation,
were renewed in a memorandum fil
ed today by Senator Jones of Wash
ington, republican, with the senate
Judiciary sub-committee investlgat
lng loans by brewers to Arthur Bris
bane in connection with tho latter's
purchase of the Washington Time.
Senator Jones, author of the reso
lution, adopted by the senato and un
der which the sub-committee Is not
ing, presented his memorandum for
the purpose of contending that the
inquiry Is unlimited in scope and not
as has been suggested, confined alone
to the Washington Times. .
- Facts Established
Documentary .evidence alone, the
memorandum asserts, will establish
the following facts:
"That the United. States' Brewers
association; Individual 'brewers, and
cerporatlons,. have financed newspa
ners In! the interest of the liquor traf
fic, anit deceived the pnbllo as to the
Beeret-aTrangeraents for money loan
ed;' which In some cases was to he re
paid only In the discretion of the
newspaper-owner, out or the paper, 11
there should be any profits. '
"That the United States Brewers'
association and certain- Individual
brewers who helped finance certain
newspapers advocating the liquor
traffic also contributed to the Nat
ional German-American Alliance and
financed the publication of an offlc
lal organ .after the .sinking of the
Lusitanla and: other Bimilar German
atrocities.
"That, the United States Brewers
' association and certain individual
brewers and brewery corporations
have been convlfctcd, pleaded' guilty,
or nolo contendere, to the charges of
violation of federal corrupt practices
act and other criminal laws and paid
several hundreds of thousands of
dollars In fines and penalties.
"That the National German-American
Alliance was financed In part by
the bitewerB' association and Individ
ual brewers and liquor dealers
Financed by Iliewcrs
.. "That the brewers' association
thru organizations whose identity
has been concealed, such as the so
called National Association of Conv
merce and Labor, Manufacturers and
Dealers' association, Business. Men's
association. Tax Payers' league,
Home Rule and other organizations,
have made political surveys relating
to the attitude of candidates for of
fice and how they could be Infliienc
ed and controlled In the Interest of
the liquor traffic. Such organ!'
zatlons and individuals also have en
couraged the starting of strikes In
dry territory and Instigated local
troubles In shops and factories whose
owners and managers favored prohl
bitlon.
"That the brewery trade and liq
uor traffic is pro-German in its sym
pathy."
Documents in possession of the
alien property custodian, the attor
ney-general of Texas, federal district
attorneys at Pittsburg, Detroit, and
Austin, Texas, together with th
German-American Alliance organ
and German newspapers were cited
as evidence by Senator Jones. II
said the war department Intelligence
service has other evidence of "brazen
methods" of liquor interests to cor
nipt electorates and public officials
The total amount of subscriptions1
in the Medford district liberty. bond
campaign this noon was $320,000,
the subscriptions of Monday

bond subscriptions,

of the public -who have, not yet sub
scribed, or: who have not subscribed
liberally enough according to their
means, to ignore what it forms Ger

Improvement In crop prospeots on
October 1 over a month ago was
shown today by the Improvement in
the department of agriculture's
monthly report.
Corn Improved to the extent of
46,000,000 bushels and now gives
prospect of a 2,717,775,000 crop
which would be 44 1.000,000 .bushels
smaller than last year s. i".
Spring wheat improved to the ex-
Tont of about 20,000,000 -i bushels
mora than that produced last year.
With this addition to spring wheat,
tho total wheat crop Including winter
wheat now In prospect is 91S.920,-
000 bushels. That comes close to
the billion bushel mark set by the
