MEDFORD MXIE TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREOOX, SATURDAY, OCTOBER f.
PAOE THREE
PLAN TO ERECT
BIG CANNFRY IF
VALLEY WATERED
One direct result of the benefits
that would accrue to Bedford and
the valley with irrigation is the pro
posed establishment of a big cannery
here which would annually for a per
iod ot from three to five- months
employ from 100 to 300 persons and
buy many of the valley's products
to be canned. This concern is com
ing here If assured that Medford will
have Irrigation.
For some time past Harvey Stew
art of Lewiston, Mont., who ' repre
sents a syndicate of men who plan
to ,establl8li a new canning works,
has been In correspondence with the
Commercial club relative to locating
the,' establishment hero. He was
especially Interested in the Irrigation
feature, as he stated that the concern
would not locate here unless the dis
trict was Irrigated. He seemed satis
fied that this would be the Ideal lo
cation for the canning works and
that all products necessary for Its
operation could bo raised here.
Secretary Satchwell who last weok
notified Mr. Stewart of the favorable
outcome of the $1,500,000 bond elec
tion for the ' Irrigation district has
just received word from him that
himself or another syndicate repre
sentative will be here shortly to furr
ther investigate the situation, sign
up contracts with growers, etc. Mr.
Stewart writes that the cannery will
put up baked pork and beans, fruits,
vegetables, catsups, cocktail sauces,
soups, preserves ail high-grade pro
duels.. Its output would be on a par,
he. writes, with those concerns like
the Heinz, Curtis and other national
ly known canneries. . .
At the start the cannery would
have an annual pack of from 25,000
to 30,000 cases. The market tor the
cannery output Is already assured,
he further writes, as the government
has already spoken for the first two
years output. Thus many acres
would have to be signed up and the
necossary labor would have to be' as
sured before the cannery located
here.
But above all the location of the
proposed cannery here depends en
tirely on the valley being irrigated.
ALLIED I RAIDS
FAST DEMORALIZING
GERMAN MORALE
I.OXDO.V-, Oct., 5. fresh , word
comes to the government almost
daily from Indisputable channels of
the increasing effect ot allied air
raids upon the German people.
The Cologne Gazette frankly ack
nowledges thut "these raids are hav
ing the effect on morale which the
entente allies Intended."
it speaks ot how the pessimism of
the bombed districts is spreading to
other parts of the empire thru letters
written from the Rhine towns.
And the air offensive is not only
directly but Indirectly having Us ef
fect on tho military operations
thru the German efforts to increase
their air power and the consequent
drain on other branches,
British air power Is constantly In
creasing and the air ministry Is tak
ing every possible step to see that the
filers' and workers' efforts for the
country does not ' "set them back"
when they return to clvit life. Al
most every mechanical trade' Is
taught in the training schools, and
exceptional educational advantages
are offered.
The British losses are compara
tively light, the air chiefs state. They
announce that one machine Is lost or
damaged for every five tons of bombs
dropped, or one machine for every
six raids.
