with soldiers from Camp Lewis pass
ed thru the city this forenoon, one at
about 7 a. m. and the other at 10:25
a. m. A number of Medford and
Jackson county men were on the
trains. The destination of the sol
diers could not be learned.

The good old county of Jackson is
waking up In the liberty bond cam
paign but the Medford district Is still
very drowsy and lagging far behind
the other districts. There are signs
tho that Medford will very soon be
wide awake and climbing fast to the
top.
Every district In the county
Is over the top or close to
the top but Medford, the majority
reaching the goal today. But Med
ford made a clean jump of $30,000
by early Saturday nftornoon, bring
ing the district's total so far during
the campaign to $130,000. The
quota for the district Is $298,158.
The many solicitors of the district
early today began working hard to
line up the slow and indifferent citi
zens. Men were put on the streets
to stop every rural visitor and stran
ger In the city and Importune him to
take subscriptions.
Tae Liberty loan committee an
nounces that it has Just completed
a new card inkier of every citizen of
Medford, men and women, with their
addresses, and that every Individual
who does not come forward voluntar
ily and subscribe will be called upon
and urged to do his or her duty.
Splendid work In furtherance of
the Liberty loan was done at the
high school yesterday afternoon.
During the assembly hour Gus New
bury made an effective liberty loan
add-oss to the students and teachers
following which twenty of the stu
dents signed up for, subscriptions.
Later in- the afternoon A. E. Reames
and W F. Isaacs went to the high
school building as solicitors tyid
came away with subscriptions from
all but two or three of tho teachers,
these few exceptions desiring a little
more time in which, to make up their
minds as to tho amount they' would

the meeting having been ordered by
the war department for the men to
receive instructions from Captain R.
H, Russell of Camp Lewis, and also
hear representatives from the Red
Cross, the Army Y. M. C. A. and the
Oregon Social Hygiene soc'pty. The
meeting begins promptly at 6 o'clock.
A very large audience Is expected,
as 2312 men alone registered on
Sept. 12. All patriotic male citizens
are urged to attend; learn to co-operate
intelligently with the war de
partment and help put millions In
France ahead of schedule. By so
doing they can save the government
thousands In money und weeks in
time.

Portland on the charge of violating
the espionage art, will he held next

In the meantime .Mr. Lewis is at lib
erty on his own recognizance.
The accused Is charged with mak
ing sedillous utterances against the
government, and the case 13 regard
ed as of such Importance that United
States District Attorney llaney will
come here from Portland to person
ally conduct the government's sliie of
the case.
