ing at the tires of all autos which do
not heed their command to stop on
the highway and submit to a search.
This heroic treatment was begun
last Thursday morning and the first
victims were the three Portland
bootleggers who were given 60-day
jail sentences and fines of $250 on
Monday. Their auto, in which was
Hr rpiarts of whisky and il dozen
quarts of beer, was disabled by shots
from tho state policemen. The pris
oners, Barney Porlmah, Morris Mlns
ky and Geo. B. Goldc, claim that
seven carloads of booze destined for
Salem and Portland successfully pre
ceded tlium over the Pacific highway
last Wednesday night. This story is
denied by the policemen, who claim
that only four cars, including that
of tho prisoners, passed over the
mountain from California that night.
Halted by Police '
State Policemen Ireland and Trip

4 a. m. two cars showed up. The
first ono stopped on demand, but Its
occupants wero legitimate tourists.
Tho other car speeded away while
the first was being searched.
Tho next car to appear was that
of tho Portland prisoners. They re
fused to stop in answer to tho offi
cers' domaiuls and speeded ahead.
The policemen then emptied their re
volvers at tho wheels of the disap
pearing car, disabling ono of the
wheels. This was near the suntmi
J. J. Walker, tunnel guard in the Sis
kiyous, discovered the disabled auto
and the hidden booze, and phoned
Chief of Police Thatcher at Ashland.
The bootleggers were arrested on
thoir return.
The captured whisky has been re
quisitioned by tho government for
use In military hospitals. Further
Sensational developments In this case
are expected within the next few-days.
