The Medford attendance at the
Southern Oregon Soldiers and Sailors
encampment at Grants Pass yester
day was slim, concerning which
Thursday's dally Courier of that elly
said: "Today Is Medford day at the
Old Soldiers and Sailors encampment
but inasmuch as the Medford people
did not put in an appeurance there
will be no Medford program. There
are a few Medford people in cump
but no general representation. The
pressure of the fruit season is held
accountable for the slim representa
tion. The big dinner by the W. It. C.
was given this noon. One long table

Floyd E. Miller, former assistant
engineer of the Itogue River Canal
company and familiarly known to his
friends as "Heavy," who was drafted
two months ago after he had repeat
edly tried (o enlist In the engineer
but was rejected because of a minor
physical defect, is now located at the
Fort Denjanilir Hurrlson cantonment
near Indianapolis. He was only at
Camp Lewis a month, when he was
transferred Into tho engineers service
and sent to Fort Denjamfn Harrison
from where he will soon sail for
France.
The spruce trees In the Crater lake
region nro unusually heavily laden
with cones this year. Several boughs
plucked from a spruce tree, which
are on exhibition in the front window
of the Commercial club, show how
numerous are the cones.
G. M. Chlldreth was riding his bi
cycle west on West Main at 5:30 p.
m. Thursday when an auto owned
by a Jacksonville woman and driven
by her 1 0 or 1 2-year old son, turned
Into West Main from Oakdale, In his
rear and ran Into him, throwing him
and his bicycle a considerable (lis
tnnce. Mr. Chlldreth suffered c
badly bruised hip and his bicycle
was considerably damaged. The po
lice are Investigating.
Lieutenant MaBwell of tho Uni
versity of Oregon, arrived In the city
Thursday morning and laid out
system of trenches for the Medford
officers training unit to dig, in
field In the rear of tho Pacific and
Eastern railroad depot. Yesterday
aftornoon about 25 members of the
unit began the work of digging the
trenches. The unit will drill at the
baseball grounds tonight unless it
rains. If rain prevents the drill will
be held at theirmory.
