strange procession of ennvas-covered
wagons, drawn by mules, for more
than a month have been creeping out
of west Texas with farmers and
ranchers who have despaired of try
ing a make A llvelliiooc on the land
that has been parched under a blaz
ing Bun and has seen virtually no
rain for thirty-six months.
Tho emigrants from thlB particular
section have turned their faces
toward the cotton fields of eastern
Texas and Oklahoma, where work
for all can easily be obtained. In
some parts of tho west Texas district,
dusk finds as many as a dozen of
these emigrant camps In a single
mllo.
From tho Panhandle and the nor
thern section of tho stato come re
ports that similar caravans, reminis
cent of half a century ago, mark tho
exodus of farmers from those dis
tricts who are moving toward Colo
rado and farther west. '
Tho war has played Its part with
the departing homesteader, but lack
of rain has been the real factor. Most
of the settlers have been on land
rented from the state. Some have
spent years of labor building up their
herds and others have been working
tho land Into a profitable state of
cultivation.
But the drought came and 4 lie cat

did not dio wore too weak to bear

crop in west Texas this year was a
failure.
The country which the settlors are
leaving Is that wost and north of Fort
