FEUDALIZING AMERICA.
I
T litis taken ft w.'tr to make tlio world stifc for (Icninoracy
to make Anicrifii safe for feudalism. When congress
lici'inittcd Americans to ai;ce)t foreign decorations for
meritorious services in the battlefields, it let down the bars
for feudal lilies bestowed by monarch who themselves
are figureheads of democratic states survivals of decaying-
feudalism.
(leneral J'ershing and oilier Americans have been
knighted by King (Jeorge in recognition of having deliver
ed the goods, and in Jiritain anyways, are enti
tled to the prefix "Sir." Jt would be discour
teous to refuse the honor and the general has
too much common sense to attempt to use it
even if it did not jar on democratic ears. JJut tin;
evident effort of royalty to perpetuate its prerogatives
even in foreign democracies is in itcs1ionable taste. But
what could be expected from it king whose court is in
mourning for 1 lit? worst; tyrant of them till the Russian
czar?
The word knight means servant, military attendant or
flillmvnr 111 (lwl.il tiliwu o l.-nio'lif wmu o momdeil man ot
arms, serving it superior in return for a tenure of lantu!
Litter, in chivalry, the knight was one, generally of noble
birth, who after serving as page or squire, was admitted to
special military rank "dubbed" by i'uedal superior with
various ceremonies. Now knighthood is usually conferred
in recognit ion of special merit.
The "most" honorable" order of the Bath which was
conferred upon Pershing, was established by (leorge I. in
17-5 a pretended revival of :m order supposed to have
been created by King Henry IV. at his coronation in I! JIM).
In LSI") it was recognized in three classes to eonuneniorate
the close of the Napoleonic wars. "In 1847 the civil knights
commanders and companions were .added. The members
wear a. handsome badge, which varies according to rank,
and il is purely an order of merit.
At the same time that the United States permits citi
zens to receive foreign titles, it strong effort is being made
to democratize Canada and a bill, iauuehed by returned
soldiers, i now before parliament against, the granting or
honoring of titles in the Dominion. The movement is due
to evidence tliat'politics is played to get lilies and wealthy
war profiteers are making large donation to worthy move
ments for the sole purpose of obtaining a title. Jt is also
charged that titles are obtained by the purchase of the in
fluence of party leaders, who use their best offices with
the king lo obtain titles for their clients as they have in
all t hue and ages.
Titles are an empty honor in Canada but the recip
ients usually leave for Kngland to claim a seat in the
house of lords. They would be equally empty in America
but ( would greatly delight the smart -set snobs. Jf it
"sir" why not a "lord"? We might soon have tin Ameri
can peerage of our own, descendants of those who reaped
fortunes in speculation in "war babies" or through money

10 LICK BOGHE
SOLE IDEA OF
A letter recelycU from Major K. E.
Kelly of tho signal corps In France,
dated July 14, JJastllu (lay, reads In
part as follows:
"Tills In the bis French holiday
and the mayor and French officers
aro to-glve ns a blow-out in about
thirty minutes. Wo aro all dressed
up for the occasion,' and 1 have clean
ed up on tho work so as to havo a
part of a holiday. Ja tho afternoon
we are to have a ball game between
tho field officers, of which 1 am one,
and tho Junior officers. Tho adjutant
general Is to pitch and 1 to catch for
the field officers. He Is an old West
Point star and wo are figuring on
giving tho Juniors a run for tholr
lives. It ought to he a great sight to
soe a bunch at old stiffs like the field
crowd getting limbered up into tho
national game. Some of the colonels
are old veterans of the Philippines,
but game old ,boys and think they
are young as ever. My but there will
be a lot of sore arms and bones to
morrow. This Is therefore a "Just
before the Battle" letter. It looks
like rain, but nothing hut a shower of
cats and dogs will dampen the ardor
of tho old sports. I'm sorry we can't
givo you bulletins on this fight by
rounds or innings, but I'll give you a
running story of it after the game.
"You know it's bo hard to find
something to write about that isn't
taboo that one welcomes most any
sort of diversion that may be chron
icled. Wo live a rattier humdrum
life it's all work and mighty little
play, but it's most interesting work
and It all tends toward putting tho
llocho out of business. We have one
stock inquiry here on everything.
"Will It help to lick the Ilochc?"
tliafs tho watchword. The men are
all the lamo way, they want to finish
tho joti and get back homo and when
tlioy get tho Hun on the run you can
bet they won't let htnl get any
breath. ,
"We havo junt taken another
growth and there Is so very much lo
do that wo don't think of much else
but work. I wish I could tell you of
all tho different lines of activity the
signal corps has developed, but there
Is no use in working the censor, he
bus enough to do as It. is with tills
growing army. Tho censors aro won
derfully clover in ferreting out at
tempts to givo troop locations by
code. We have an immense amount
of mall that passes thru this office
writton by enlisted personnel and
there are those who foolishly attempt
to violato tho rules, somo by rather
clover codes, hut tho censor picks up
such codes Infallibly nnd then comes
a court martial and punishment for
tho offender. I recall ono such tn
slaaco whore a man in an important
front line sector wrote a letter hi
which certain letters wcro faintly
dotted and which was a prearranged
code. It went through until It
reached tho censor whero It was
promptly plekcd'up and sent back for
disciplinary action."

The most remarkable, demonstra
tion on pear blight control ever held
in Oregon v. ill be glvon at the South
ern Oregon 'Experiment Station near
Talent on Monday, August 20, at
p. m.
Profossor Itolnier has conducted
'an experiment during the present
summer and has obtained results
which will mean more to blight con
trol work than anything that has
been dono slnco the discovery of the
cause of pear blight. The results ob
tained will completely revolutionize
certain treatments in combatting
pear blight. Our growers have often
obtained unsatisfactory results from
tholr work In fighting' pear blight,
even where very thoro work has been
done. Tho results of this experiment
will show why ' such unsatisfactory
results have been obtained, and also
how entirely satisfactory results can
he obtained. Exports who have seen
these results slnto that this experi
ment should mean a saving of a mil
lion dollars annually to the fruit in
dustry of America.
Every orchardlst, and every blight
cutter in the valley should be present
at this meeting. These results will
apply to every orchard whether old
or young. Tho work is entirely dif
ferent from any that has ever been
demonstrated at the Experiment Sta
tion on previous occasions.
If you want to see the results of
the most important, and tho most
convincing experiment ever conduct
ed on the proper method of treating
pear blight you should attend this
meeting. The demonstration begins
at 2 o'clock sharp and will require
less than one hour.
