    BELGIAN RELIEF
AN ATLANTIC PORT, July 23.
A Bolfc'ian relief ship, with a smoko-
stack missing passed here In tow of
a tug bound eastward this afternoon.
The words "Belgian Relief" could be
plainly seen from shore.
AN ATLANTIC POUT, July 23.
A lurge steamer with part of hor
smokestack gone and her bridge dam
aged, in tow of a government tug
off the southern New England coast,
was reported oy the captain of a
stoamer which arrived hern todnv
The captain believed the disabled ves
sel to be a Belgian relief steamer.
The tug and her tow were near the
scene of the recent operations of a
German submarine.
The captain said he was quite sure
ho could make out the words -rioi
glan relief" In large white letters on
the side of the disabled vessel. The
steamer had four masts, he said. The
tug- was taking Its tow westward.
The sighting ofthe disabled steam
er follows the report of signals of
distress heard last night. War ves
sels were sent out early today and
searched the seas. Most of them re
turned with the report that there
were no signs of a craft in distress.
Aviators who first reported tha Die
nals went out again today. They re
turned at noon, Ojut, under orders

brought up by the enemy, rind the
necessity o bringiii!; up heavy ar
tillery and supplies. It appears,
however, that the momentum of the
allies has not been spent and that
they are forcing ahead tilong vir
tually the entire front of the buttle.
At 8:13 o'eloek this morning the
French launched an attack alonjr a
four mile front in the Monlilidier see
tor. In three hours they advanced u
mile. London hints that the attack
was over a wider front than that
mentioned in the dispatch.
French Drive I'lidcrway
This: . new onslaught, directed
against a front that has been compar
atively quiet since the German olTein
sive there came to a halt early in
June, may hnve an important bearing
on the development of the inilitnrv
situation along the whole front.
Previously in an altack reported us
humched Inst night in this sector the
Vreneh had occupied the villages ol
Mailly-Rnineuvall, Sauvillers and An
Ivillers, which are west of the Avre
0 river and immediately south of the
JHiint of French successes eurlyicr in
the month when they raptured val
uable positions over n Hire mile front
south of Castcl, ndviincini; to n depth
of a mile and a quarter. Prisoners
numbering .ISO were (uken.
The enemy nin.v choose a line nlmiu
the Ourcq for further defensive op
erations but the presence of Hie al
lied troops to the north of Ihi
stream nuiy compel a retirement al
least as far as the Vo.-le river. This
is said to be indicated by concentra
tions of German iroops at Fimcs
and other points along the Veslc.
Dominate Avre Valley
The success of the French north ol
Miinldidier improves (heir line there.
They have now secured positions
which dominate the Avre valley for
Severn! miles along a vilol sector.
Farther north I he ltrili.li have ad
vanced their line slightly south of
llebutcrne, where they recently at
tacked and moved Iheir positions for
ward over n mile front. South of
Jlcrris and Celeron, in the L.vs sec
tor in Flanders, the llritish lines also
y were improved and local successes in
the Mamel sector north of Albert and
in front of Amicus are reported.
The Germans nre burnig munitions
in the urea north of the Mornc ami
i'ltlic angle between the Maine and
the Ardre .which flows into the Vcsle
at Fismes.
New American Line
French and American troops north
and northeast of Chateau Thierry are
now on n line well (o Iho east of La
t'roi xnnd Grisolles and nolrhenst ol
Mont Si. Pere. Two towns in this
area have been ruptured by the
American.
For Constipation and Biliousness
Good digestion goes far toward
comfort and health In hot weather.
Undigested food in the stomach can
quickly poison the system. Ceo. Jen
ner, 41 Labor St., Ssn Antonio,
Tex., writes: "Foley Catbartlo Tab
lets have proven the best laxative I
have taken and I recommend them
'o any one suffering from constipa
tion or biliousness. They should be
in every traveling man s grip." Quick
relief for sick headache, bloating or
other condition caused by bad diges
tion. Bold everywhere.

MAJOR TEDDY, JR..
HIT IN ATTACK ON
PARIS, July 23. Major Theodore
Itoosevclt, Jr., received the wound
froin which he is suffering while
leading an altack on a machine gun
ne.st at Ploisy, southwest of Soissons
on Friday. The wound was made by
a machine gun bullet behind the left
knee.
The Paris edition of the Chicago
Tribune says the major reached the
American Hed Cross hospital on Fri
day evening. An oncration on his
wound was performed at midnight
by Lieutenant Col. Joseph A. Blake
of New York. No holies were broken
by the bullet.
The inujor's tag which is worn by
all wounded soldiers, reads; "Severe
gunshot wound." It was techni
cally described later as a "ocrfornt
ing wound of the popliteal space."
Surgeons say it will be six weeks be
fore the major returns lo the front.
Captain Archie Roosevelt said yes
terday that his brother was resting
easily in his own home on Avenue Du
Bois De lioulogne. His leg at present
is useless.
Major Roosevelt led the assault on
a machine gin) nest, which was par
ticularly annoying to tile Americans.
In the excitement he went "over the
top" without a lieiiaet, and when
wounded was in the midst of the Ger
mans. The nest was cleaned out and
the village of Ploisy fell soon af
terward. Portland Livestock
