VoRelstein & Co., Peer, Soiidlicinier & Co. and other (!cr
inan owned concerns which dominated the metal market
of America to the profit of German industry. The kaiser
himself was personally interested in these concerns
which were really hianches of the parent German
concern and operated throughout Ihe world to the finan
cial glory of the JIun. They controlled most, of the metal
and smelting companies either directly or indirectly and
manipulated the metal market.
These concerns, working through neutral branches,
supplied Germany with vast; quantities of copper and
other needed metal, even after the United States declared
war. As a result, some of the resident officials and stoe
holders are in internment camps, and souks under surveil
lance. They ought to he criminally prosecuted, for their
record shows them 1he meanest war profiteers yet located
as well as traitors to the United States.
In order to avoid federal taxation, these German
owned metal concerns paid out their excess profits in sala
ries and commissions to its officials and managers who
were merely dummy stockholders for the kaiser and his
junkers. Take the American Metals Co. and observe the
German names of these officials and their salaries, as
typical of these practices:

The only thing that can be done, so it is 'reported from
Washington, in the matter of this traitorous fraud, is to
collect the tax. None of these llun swindlers go to jail.
They escape it by giving up the loot under process of liti
gation. One great trouble Avith the United States is that we are
too tolerant and too lenient with the traitor in our midst.
The detected Gorman spy is interned, hoarded, fed and
clothed at public expense, while the detected German war
profiteer swindler merely has to , fork over his stolen
booty.

U-BOAT TRICK
LONDON, July 20. (Hy the As
Bociatotl Prcso). Tricky German U
boat cominandors liavo conceived a
now plan designed to deceive crews
of tho allied submarine destroyers In
tho gamo of hide and seek in Euro
pean waters. When a depth bomb Is
discharged and does not cripple or
destroy tho German undersea 'boat,
as sometimes happens, a quantity of
oil is released by somo dovico of tho
submersible and quickly rises to the
water's surfaco.
Tho hopo of tho German U-boat
captain Is that tho commander of tho
destroyer will seo tho oil, bellove that
tho submarino has been wrecked and
drop no moro depth charges. Mean

of destroyern and submarino chasers

have been dropping depth 'bombs In
greater numbers than previously,
using tho oil as a guide to tho gen
eral location of their target.
"Oil camouflago" tho American
and Hrltish navy men call this latest
German submarino trick.

SEIZE SHIP PLANo s
BEING SENT TO
WASHINGTON, July 23. An or

Adoo Instructing customs collectors
to refuse permits to ull except gov
ernment officials for taking ship and
shipyard plans out of tho country, re
vealed that agents of tho shipping
board recently seized in New York a
largo amount of valuable ship specifi
cations in clearing for Scandinavian
ports.
Tho specifications doalt minutely

and also with vessels under construc
tion in this country for the French
navy. Somo of them were tho prop
erty of American builders, who ex
plained that they had been asked for
plans as u basis for post-war orders.
Investigation is being made of the
purpose for which the othor ship
ments wore intended.
Military intorosts of tho United
Statos were considered to be jeopar
dized by the marine documents which
were taken from passengers and
members of tho crews. Tho docu
ments are said to have included
drawings of American shipyards,
photographs of ways, plants and
ships, blue prints of American ships
and mine sweepers and specifications
of ships being 'built In France.
Secretary McAdoo's order forbids
the exportation of shipbuilding In
formation, except under permit from
the emergency fleet corporation and
the secretary has been asked to order
tho confiscation of all such plans
found in the possession of unauthor
ized persons leaving the country.
Marino and technical periodicals
which publish unauthorized drawings
and photographs of American ship
building activities or inventions will

TO USE RESERVISTS
NEWT YORK, July 23. That Teu
ton conspirators planned, even after
this country's entrance into the war,
to use Gorman reservists to invade
Canada and Xioxlco, Is indicated In
tho seized correspondence of Dr.
Frederick August Richard von
Strensch, according to federal offic
ials. Von Strensch, when arrested.
was described as a former protoge of
Bismarck. Todny ho was described
as a relative of the German emperor.
The objects of the proposed Inva
sions, according to the authorities,
were to hamper tho dospatch of Can
adian troops abroad and to Join arm
ed Mexicans for the purpose of mak
ing an attack upon the United States.
Federal officials believe Alexandra
Varda, hotter known as the Countess
von Schcele, was tho author of let
torsslgned "L" which were found In
the belongings of von Strensch. The
woman was arrested shortly after
von Strensch's apprehension last
week. In these letters were sentences
indicating that between November
1915 and April 20, 1917, plots were
in existence for 25,000 German re
servists to cross from Buffalo, N. Y.,
to Bridgeburg, Ontario, and for 100,
000 Germans to enter Mexico at nu
merous points along the Rio Grande.

55 per cent of the output of the seven big Maxwell
plants is war work! 1 ,
Every one of those plants is doing its patriotic
duty 100 per cent.
We are frank to say we believe that is equally
true of our competitors we have yet to learn of
a single shirker in this industry.
If there is anything more Uncle Sam desires done,
we will 'tackle that too.
Meantime, and for the very reasons set forth above,
we deplore the loose statements of panic-preaching
publicists throughout the country.
These would close down the third largest industry
in America on the grounds that it is a "non essen
tial" industry.
No other industry is doing so much outside its
regular spherfi doini; it so willingly, doing it so
rapidly and doing it so honestly as is this very
motor car industry.
For a ship builder to make a few more ships; or
for an ordnance plant to make more guns is only to
develop their normal business.
But for a motor car factory to make ships entire
and in part and guns and shells and fuses
and caterpillar tractors and mine anchors and '
airplane motors, wings and other parts that is
doing things.
a i j 13 uiuuauy is uuui un
Detroit, the very center of the motor car industry
an inland city and one where, in normal times,
we had no war industry now is doing more war
work than any other city in America.
And in our regular line we are also helping mors
than any other class of business men to solve the
transportation problems at home and abroad for
we not only transport a very large percentage of
our own raw material and finished product on hs
own wheels, but every truck yes, and every pas
senger car too helps by thousands, of tons per
year in carrying, formerly done by the railroads.
Loose talk is harmful at any time it is particularly
serious just now.
Let other industries do their part do a titb of
what the motor car industry is doing and they
will be going some.
Meantime your own transportation problem, ac
centuated as it is by the war activities and the
war prosperity or the country, can best be solved
by an efficient, economical, reliable Maxwell
Motor Truck.
