1 Traveling Over Seas, June, 1918.
Dear Sister Pearl :
; This is a beautiful Sunday out on
the Atlantic. The ocean is culm and
Ihe boat behaving, very nicely today,
'would,' not speak so kindly of the
past behavior of t lie old ship, liow-
ever. -
I will give you h brief sketch of our
trip to date. We left the home camp,
Ft. SIcArthur, Culif., Monday noon,
traveled to the'southern part of the
United States. Then across the
United Stntes to the Clrcnt Lakes,
then down the Hudson to Camp Mer
ritt, X. Y.
We landed there on Monday morn
ing. It is sure a monstrous camp.
There are four Y. M. C. A. bouses, one
Knights of Columbus and one place
palled a hostess house, riin by the Hed
Cross women, a place where relatives
and friends may visit the boys.
We had some equipment condemn
ed. The first few days we stayed
there were busy ones, filled with roll
call, inspection, checking up our be
longings, sending telegrams, and writ
ing postcards and letters. :
We left enmp Saturday with pucks,
overcoats, nnd ri flies, marched up
through the hills and finally down to
the beautiful Hudson. Thoro we fer
ried down the river to our transport.
We wept aboard about noon, but wc
did not steam out until Sunday even
ing. We went out a short distance and
anchored. Early Monday morning wc
Hiarica me irrenc voyage across tlic
dark blue sea. We were all below
deck, but some of us could look
through the port holes and got a
good gliinpsn of Ihu Stalue'of Lib
erty which was a grand sight. This is
a speedy boat and well iirmcd. The
second day out it began to gel
rough. Some, were sick the second
day anif many more lidded the next
day on account of tho rough sea and
stonny weather. I was one of the
majority so snent a little time look
ing over the rail of the ship. I was
iek only one day.
Several other ships, including a
destroyer, joined us the second dav.
It was a sight tine. would scarcely
want to miss, nil steaming along to
meet the great adventure. It is very
different these days from traveling
by rail; no crowds lo wave and wish
ing us "(bid Speed."
The fourth day wo sighted a ship
on the horizon to the south. It keul
puce wilb us for four hours. Specu
lation was that it might be an enemy
craft. Nothing happened, so I guess
it was just another traveler on this
broad highway.
All the boys nre standing Ibe (rip
well, however we have crowded cpiar
(ers with men and sunplics. Wc have
exercises, boxing and wrestling bonis.
music and singing. The band plays
on deck. c. have two . M. ('. A.
men nnd one army chaplain aboard so
we have movies and religious service-.
:"ie often.
The soldiers' and sailors nre in ev
ery conceivable place on deck or be
low reading some book or magazine
or writing home to mother or friends.
Friday is fish day and very nnnro
iriate out here, too.
Yestcrdav the crew had target
practice, shooting at a periscope. 1
understand we have some of the lies!
gunners of the navy aboard, and if n
sub. does show up it will look it liolv
fright.
, This is the first Sunday I have ever
spent on the sen nnd surely a beauti
ful day. Services were held in one
of the compartments. We had a
splendid sermon and we all enjoved
it.
This is our week day song.
Wc are oh our way to lliligoland,
To get the kaiser's goat,
. On u gooil old Yankee boat
I'p the Kiel cali f we'll float
And the Son of a (tun
If we see a. Hun
We'll make him understand
We'll knock the Hell into lldi
Out of llcliitlolnnd."
Some of IIicm day we hope to
Me land not so far olf where we will
go ashore to greet some Joan of Arc
nnd march on lo service ahead of us
hich is to (live the saner kraut a
ond "Yankee mixing."
I hope you're well and setting alone
s lloj lo gel a Icllrr once in a
while over here nnd if yon don't gel
an answer, just write ugaih.
With love ami best wishes.

My Dear Folks:
1 am still in the liase Hospital Sill
at St. Xazaire. My leg is doing nice
ly, it is healing, hut very still. 1 can
not stand on it. The doctors say I
am' doing well and the stiffness is
slowly coming out nnd with the aid
of my crutches I can soon move
around.
I will be glad when 1 can walk
again, you don't know bow helpless
I feel when I have to walk on one
foot. I can get-around alright on
my crutches but can't carry any
thing. Don't worry about me or think
I am discouraged, because I'm not.
A little thing like n bullet going
though my leg won't stop me. I'll soon
be buck with my company as good as
ever.
I must tell you about the good
work the iicd Cross is doing for us.
The nurses come in with nice warm
water for us to wash In mid shave for
our breakfast which is always good.
Then they; bring us the daily paper.
We get the Chicago Tribune, the
New York lleraitl and the London
Dail Mail. These are the Euroenn
editions and have only two sheets
but we get lots of news out of these
papers. Tbev also briiig us ningi
zines and Saturday Evening Post.
The doctors come every day and
dress our wounds. Also the chap
lain makes us a visit every day.
This morning tho Red Cross la
dies came . in nnd bud a smile and a
pleasant word and best of nil they
gave us each some stick candy. We
have a dandy bunch of boys in our
ward, some with arms tied i.p, some
with heads tied up and some witli
legs tied up, like me. How I wish you
could see us when wc go to the "Y,"
every one of ns bandaged some
where, followed by the ones on
crutches, it certainly is some parade!
About every oilier day we have a
Victrola ill our ward and we almost
play il to death.
We have been having some nice cn
tcrlainmcnls at bur "Y." Last night
wc had some players and singers
from the Paris opera, a real treat.
Wc nre having beanlifal weather.
Tile trees arc beautiful, (live my re
gards to all my friends. Love to each
and every one of you. Your son,
FRANK HU1ISAHD.
The reference to Hie work of the Y.
M. C. A. and (lie Hed Cross in giving
little comforts nnd pleasures to our
boys should make us think twice he
fore spending money that might go
to these two splendid causes on our
own pleasures. Wo can do with few
er movies and less music in order that
our boys, who are giving up every
thing for us, may have these little di
versions. Darrel Minklcr enjoyed a furlough
with his limit, Misi Charles Young a
few weeks ago. lie has finished hi.,
course in the oleiitricnl school at
Mare Island with a rating of second
class electrician. Two more AL-d-tird
boys, Charles nnd Homer M
Lain nre taking this same cour-c nnd
hope to finish soon with the same
rating.
