There is a strong noto of relief and gratiludo in the newspaper comment this morn ing on General Koch's successful counter-stroke between Solssons and Chateau-Thierry, which Is hailed as tho most chorine news for a twelve month news which It Is admitted seems at first too good to ho true. Hearty tributes are paid to General Foch's strategy, while in several of tho view that tho success has been ' duo to tho reorganization which ' placed the allied command under one Iiond. Tho courngo and daBh of tho Kran-co-Amoricnn troops also aro warmly praised. Tho rejoicings, howevor, aro tompercd by tho belief that n flerco i German effort will follow as a coun ter to Genorul Koch's Initial success. PICNIC AT ASHLAND , WAS BIG SUCCESS Tho Jackson County Merchants' as sociation picnic held ut tlm grove ut Ashland yesterday was well attend ed nnd a pleasant afternoon nnd evening was enjoyed by nil. Business men representing nil parts of the , county woro proscht, and many topics of Interest to tho ommerelal worrtl woro discussed. Tho address of welcome was de livered -Jiy J. C. McCoy, a banker of Ashland, nttor a spirited concert by tho Mcdford boys band. Will Gates, of this city, dollvorod nn eloquent talk on the trade necoptame plan, and ex plained its virtues, both to the busi ness men nnd the public. Mr. Mc Coy also spoke. I N IiKSI'OXSK o him ny inuirics from anxious friends mid relatives as well ns from llic men called to the colors, Hie Mail Tribune stales Hint the reason that, it does not print the names of the men drafted to leav e the coming week and for whom the farewell entertainment is to be given tonight, is because the local draft board refuses to furnish them for reasons best known to itself. Of course the matter is of public interest and the list of July drafted men has loii" since been printed in the other counties of the state K-iiowh. mid the individuals knows lierlinns. it is none of the public's .'business although the public is requested fo provide entertainment and a rousing farewell for whom? The success of the draft lies in the co-operation of the public. 'This co-operation is best secured by the fullest publicity. This publicity has been requested by the war department and freely given by the newspapers but the local draft board has not taken advantage of it. The Mail Tribune has repeatedly requested for publi cation a list of the men as classified in the various classifi cations of the draft so the people would know who were called and who evaded service, whether the law was being a1 ministered as contemplated, without favoritism but the lists has never been forthcoming. The Mail Tribune also requested the list of those who were reclassified in accordance with the' work or fight order of the war department but has never been given a name. Tins draft calls are public business not private busi ness, and the best protection the draft board has is the fullest possibh publicity of its act ions. Tin; policy of the people be damned cannot he applied to the selective ser vice law and keep up public interest in its operation. It is not the Mail Tribune's fault that it has not been able to supply information concerning the activities of that close corporation, the Jackson county draft board.
