    'ERNEST MMMST-
LETTER TELLS OF
SEEING LONDON
A letter dated from London, June
111, from Ernest Adams, the Mcd
ford aviator who was reccnfly lulled
in Lnftiaim, nocn received Here,
descriptive of n visit to London, I!
follows :
I urn ill London at present, on n
three-day pass to visit the nietropo-
and it certainly is a wonderful
eity, so entirely ditlerent from New-
York, t'hienfro or any other Ameri
can city. Everywhere there are so
jmiiv interesting sifrhts to see, that in
such a short time os three days one
enn only see a few of the most im
portant. Sly one regret is that 1
have forgotten so much iiliont English
iiistory, as nearly all of the old places
mean so much in the early history
of England.
"Yesterday, T, with two other hoys
who eonie to London with me, took a
sight seeiiiif trip, first ridinsr iiriiimd
through the business section and then
to the Tower of London. The Tower,
or old fortress,-covers about 10 acres
and is surrounded by u moat, which
is dry now, and used as a drill srouiul.
We went all through the tower, and
among a ew of the most important
things we saw, were the spot where
Anne Boleyn was beheaded, also the
block and axe used in the executions
of early davs, We were in the room
in the tower, where the two princes
were murdered by suffocation, and
also saw where their bodies were
found 200 years later.
"We saw all the means of torture
of the early days, such as the rack.
limib screw, spiked collar, etc., and
also the full armor worn in the time
of the crusades. Leaving the tower,
we went through 8t. Paul's cathed
ral, which is the most wonderful
building architecturally, on the inside,
that I have ever seen. The ceiling
is one of the finest examples of mo
saic work in the world, and the seats
mid woodwork in the choir room is
all hand carved, the work of one
man, who devoted his entire life to it,
and taking him forty years to com
plete.
"Next, came Westminster Abbev,
the oldest part of which was built by
a Saxon king, Kebert, in the year
tiOL We-saw the grave in -which he
was buried in (lie year OKi, and (lit
graves of most of the men and women
who have made history of England
u pto the present time. Many of the
most valuable statues and relics of
the early days are covered with sand
hags as a precaution against air
raids, e saw the niieen s corona
tion chair, which has been used for
nearly a thousand vears, hut the
king's chair, as well ns the crown
jewels, havo been nut nwuv out of
danger of any possible air raid.
Last night went to the Hippo
drome and saw "The Box o' Tricks,"
the scenery of which was beautiful.
otherwise it didn't amount to much.
Tims endcth my first day in London.
This morning I went, oat to Bucking
ham Palace, the home of the kill"
and queen, in time to see the guard
mount or change of guards. It is a
very formal affair, hot to me seems
like so much "red tape."
"This afternoon I went through
the House of Parliament, and heard
a debate for about an hour jiml a
half, in the House of Commons. This
was Queen Alexandria's Hose Kay,
and most of the "belles" of Loudon
were on the streets selling roses for
the benefit of the lied Cross. This
Afternoon about '25 of us Americans,
stood up on Lord Nelson monument in
Trafalgar Ktitim-o, with some of the
young lady rose sellers, and had our
pictures taken by seven or eight dif
ferent photographers ns Queen Al
exandria was driving by. Hhe Was to
get out and come up to hay some
roses where we were standing, Imt
Rowing to its raining, she didn't stop,
hir pictures will probably appear in
the morning papers, Wlien I came
to London I didn't expect to have in
picture taken with the (pieen.
"Tonight J saw J'Scven Days'
Leave" at the Lyceum and it was
very good. H started at 7 p. in. !nd
was over at !).:H1, so 1 had nothing to
do the rest of the evening Imt write
letters. Tomorrow we are planning
on taking a boat ride up the Thames
river.
"The streets of London run in all
directions, and 1 have never seen a
city that is so hard to find your way
n round, rsri-iitll.v ut night, 'with nil
the lighfs out. ll is ipiitc tin impres
sive sight walking down the street, to
see soldiers in uniforms of nearly ev
ery allied nation. The American Y.
M. C. A. called the' "Kiiglo Hut" is
right in the center of London, and
covers a square block. There are
many American girls who work there
in the office, and a wattre-M's, and
they certainly try to make it pleas
ant lor us, w hile we lire here. There
,nre also many American lied t'ro.-,s
nurse here.
"I will he broke for another month
Imt it certainly i- worth it, n I
Uiny never et another chance, while
I am here, to visit London. I hope
(hat when I get over to France, I
will he fortunate enough to have the
opportunity of visiting Paris before
I leave."

STOCKHOLM, July 17. FSimiA
reactionary (White Guard) newspa
pers are again appearing, under
Herman and White Guard protection.
The leading tied Guard paper In Fin
land, the Helsingfors T.vomles, has
been suppressed.
AH the papers now allowed to ap
pear declare for a monarchy Instead
of a republic in Finland, One, the
Svensk Tidning, gays:
"A German prince ts the only pos
sible sovereign for Finland."
'.Most other papers are openly pro
German, but make no suggestion as
to the nationality of the coming king.
In Abo, second Finnish eity, a mon
archist association has been formed.
which has issued an appeal Warning
the absence of a permanent head to
the state, for the Russian upheaval,
and pleading for a monarchical ar
rangement similar to Sweden's,
Opposition to the monarchy plan
Is certain from the Finnish socialists
and the defeated Red Guards who
return to their country. Opposition
to a German monarch is also devel
oping among Swedish liberals, who
are circulating propaganda tn Fin
land against the Germanizing ot that
country and the choice ot a German
king.
