Shortly before the arrival of two
long special military trains hearing
soldiers from Camp Lewla to Carnp
Kearney, Calif., which reached Med
ford UiIh forenoon telegrams began
arriving from a number of the many
Med ford and Jackson comity drafted
men who left hero two weeks ano in
tho big continent for Cnmp I-ewls,
Informing relatives that they would
patjs thru. Tho Medfurd relatives
dropped whatever lawk they wero at
ond hurried to the depot.
Tho firm train did not stop In thn
city and as it panned thru the hun
dredi! of boys In the coaches kept up
a continuous shouting and waving of
hands. A short time later the second
train crowded with shouting and
waving soldiers, put In appearance
and gladdened the hearts or all hy
Ktopplng at the depnt for ahout twen
ty minutes.
Tho Jackson county Sfjldiers were
allowed to leavo'the train to visit
with relatives and friends, but tho
officer In command refused all ro
fliiestH to allow the home boys to ride
with relatives and friends In aulos to
Ashland. Friends of Corporal Karl
Tu my were enpecInHy Insistent, but
Die commnnder was obdurate.
All the soldiers on both trains
were uniformed and presented a fine
appearance, altho the vast majority
had only been In service less than
two weeks. The Jackson county boys
certainly got quirk action and a
change of scenery before they had
become familiar with Camp lewls.
No no of the boys knew why so many
men wero transferred to Camp
Kearny, or how long they would be
at the latter plar.

of the local soldiers had reached the
depot. At one time during tho stop
the noise of cheering and singing had
died down entirely. This displeased
the officer In command evidently for

Thence to Kheimn there Is no
change In the situation.
The deepest penetration along this
line, approximately Is 2 miles
northeast of Chatillon, In the K ode
mat wood. This marks the greatest
advance of the Germans at any point
along the line.
East of Khcims the situation Is re
assuring. The French battle posi
tions are declared Intact and the Ger
mans have not been able to advance
southward further than the outskirts
of tho woods that parallel on the'
