Thaviu's Great Organization Which Opened and closed San Francisco Exposition
Coming on Fifth Day of Chautauqua ' 1
Th'uvius Band Is coming to Chuutuuqun thirty selected musicians from
Exposition and led by the magnetic Thavlu himself. Of the sixteen bands of nation-wide reputation -which entortnlned the groat crowds during the Expo
sition season, Thavlu's was the only one requested for a return engagement. They had so successfully pleased the throngs during tho opening days that the
directors commissioned their return for the closing weeks. ...
The secret of Thavlu's popularity is not expressed so much In the size of his organization as In the unusual personnel and the fact that Thavlu is a
master director of his accomplished musicians. All bnnd music critics' comment upon the sparkle, llfo uud dashing brilliancy of his musical Interpretation.
Two full concerts will be given bin the fifth day of Chautauqua. In addition to the band In the evenlug, three grand opera singers from Thuviu's own
(rand opera organization wlll'nppenr as soloists. . ,

U-BOATS DEFEATED .
DECLARES JBUCfl
SOUTHAMPTON, England. .July
11. Viscount Jelllcoe, former first
sea lord, speaking here today, said:
''I made a prophecy somewhat
guardedly some time ago that the
submarine campaign would be de
feated liy August. I did not know
at tho time that my words would be
quoted In every newspaper In the
kingdom, or perhaps I would not
have spoken in such assured terms.
Today, however, altho ships arc still
being sunk, they are not being de
stroyed as fast as we nro building
them, while U-boats aro being Bunk
faster than the Germans are building
them. That Is what 1 meant when I
said that the submarine campaign
would lie defeated."
