STATES DEPUTY
AMSTERDAM, Juno 21. (By the
AsKoWutcd Press.) A picture of so
cial conditions in Prussia was given
during a debute Juno 18, on the budget
of the ministry of the interior in the
koiTxo of deputies, at a session of the
reiehsfng.
''We are face to fare with a terrible
condition of public morality," said.
Deputy Braun, a socialist. "Wo bear
of numberless cases of thefts oil rail
1 roads und alarming uvonile criminal
ity. According to official statistics,
between October, 1910, and Novem
bcr, 1017, there wero 487,720 con
viclions for infractions of the food
regulations and those were only a
small percentage of the actual trans.
grcssions committed.
Are All "Sinners"
"As for Unit, wo arc all sinners,
j roiiieering exceeds all bounds; us
ury is rampant among all classes,
Fraudulent profiteering, like that of
the Daimler works, is nowise excep
tional. Even otliciul bodies attempt
to extort illegal protits. Poor poo
pie can only buy clothes at the ofl'i
cial clothing department by bribing
statesmen with tips or food.
"Everybody cheats, steals, grabs,
from jailbird to court chamberlain
who clients the needy home worker
out of his scanty cnniings, and pock
ets millions. And the longer the war
lasts the worse it becomes.
Kaiser Pushes Dirk
"Added to this is the fathcrland'i
wild war baiting propaganda, and re
fusal of equal suffrage.- What won
dor that popular exasperation bnrst
fortll in a nig strike m Janimrvf"
Dr. Drews, minister of the interior,
answered Ilerr Braun vaguely, that
ho was not responsible for the mat
ters complained of, which were un
der the jurisdiction of the military
authorities.
The socialist newspaper Vorwaerts
devoirs a long editorial to the fore
going, in which it says:
Admission of Disorders
ur. imws- nnsntislactory an
swer is tantamount to a confession o
the impotence of the civil govern
ment. In fact there is no responsi
blc civil government in Prussi
day. It. demonstrate! the necessity
for the abolition of the stale of siege
in the country for which there is no
legal justiiication. The necessity of
a responsible government is shown
especially by the fate of suffrage re
form, which has been dragged from
reading to reading without the gov
ernment intervening with the immedi
etc dissolution of the house."

brother, John, on trial for aiding
Jeremiah to flco from .justice.
O'I.eary swore that he hud never
heard of liodiger before May G, last,
when he read of him in the newspa

The Kinn Feiners examination was
dominated by bitter denomination of
bis prosecutor, Assistant District At
torney Barnes, lie was permitted bv
Barnes to tell Hie jury things he had
told his brother before ho fled. He
said he bad complained that every
time a German was arrested, govern-,

Jeremiah O'Leary. The purpose was
"to link me with disloyalty when ev
ery act of mine was that of a loyal
American citizen." lie said Barnes
was persecuting him for his activity
against British propaganda "to make
the I'nited States an integral part of
the British empire. Barnes, lie said,
had made insinuations to his lawyer,
Henry A. Wise, to induce him to drop
the case, and had "allowed his per
sonal ambition to override his public
duty."
