r.VOE THREE
19 YEARS PRISON
WHEAT FIELDS OF THE WORLD
I
E
10 GRACE L
WAUKESHA, Wis., June 10. The
finul episode in the trial of (iraee
Lusk, convicted t" the murder of
Jlrs. Alnry Newman Roberts, wife of
the former Wisconsin state veterin
arian, was enacted hero yesterday
afternoon, when Judtre Martin Lueck
sentenced the former school mistress
lo 19 years iinprisonmtnt at hurd la
bor, in the Wisconsin state neniten
tinry at Waupun. Sentence was nro
nounccd after a committee of union
ists appointed by the court had exam
ined Miss -Lusk and pronounced her
si. no. She will he taken to prison to
morrow, provided she recovers from
the collapse she suffered when sen
tence was pronounced.
1 In pronouncing: sentence 1 he court
delivered a severe arraignment both
!of Miss Lusk and of Dr. David liob
orts, whoe intimacy with Miss Litsk
extended over a period of a year and
led to the murder in June, 1!I17, of his
wife by the woman sentenced today.
"You and Dr. Roberts assailed so
ciety :it its most sensitive and vul
nerable point," the court said, "You
nsailcd the home and neither of yon
had any rifrht to deprive Mrs. Roberts
of those rights that became hers
"when Dr, Roberts took her as bis wife.
"Smile circumstances in this can
cast greater blame upon Dr. Roberts
than upon von. Still you had no
Tiffht to yield. You were experienced;
in the world. You had a -ood educn-:
lion, and I do not believe that in this
case (be minimum sentence provided
by the law meets llic situation. Your
offense demands more punishment.
"Hut you do not deserve the ntix
imuin sentence either, because of the
lilainc attaching to the acts of Dr.
Roberts. Men of his type should be.
discouraged. The medium is diffi
cult to determine what is fair to
you and riht toward society. It is
h question difficult of solution, and
pie best I can do is to make an bon
iest guess,"
As the sentence was pronounced
Miss Lusk, who bad been standing
lit the court rail, collapsed into the
hrms of her attorney and was car
ried from the room unconscious. T(-
aiiht she was in a .hyslcr.icnJ condi-
ion, and it seemed doubtful whether
fhe could be taken to rison tonior
uv, as planned.
NEW YORK, June Ifl. An appnr
lent attempt to lay the foundation for
the defense for Jeremiah O Leary,
the Sinn Fein leader, charged with
conspiracy to commit treason, wyis
made in the federal courts todav
during the trial of his brother, John
rwho is charged with aiding the form
er editor of "Hull," to escape.
Arthur Lyons, Jeremiah's "travel
ling companion" on the trip west, who
named government witness, dcserih
mi him as "verv restless and nervous"
pvitb no fixed mental condition.
Called "Harry Thaw"
When Jan'S R. Speer, a New
York lawyer, win occupies offices
with Jeremiah O Leary, was asked on
the stand his opinion of Jcrcmiuh
mental static, he replied that ''Ik
looked upon him as a replica of llar
rv Thaw."
He fore he was placed in bis cell.
Juremiah told newspaper men that he
had six weeks rest, adding that h
needed it, as he was "in pretty bad
shape."
Details of Jeremiah's filgbt were
told in court. After slating that
there never was any ngrccment or
understanding between Jeremiah nnd
John O'Leary, that the former was
running awav from the jurisdiction
of the court, Lyons asserted that
Jeremiah had asked him on May 3 to
accompany him to Reno, Nev., to try
a divorce case.
WASHINGTON", Juno 19. Presi
dent Wilson is being strongly urged
to recognize and aid the bo v let gov
ernment of Russia.
Members 0$ Ambassador Francis
staff have lately returned and mado
semi-confidential reports to the state
department.
The burden of all Is the same
that good will come from recognizing
the soviet government; that delay in
doing so can only serve the purposes
of German intrigue.
Failure to co-operate with the
soviet the only existing government
in Russia they report, helps the
Gorman plan, to foster reaction and
counter-revolution.
Arguments Mado
The soviet government is admitted
ly representative of 90 per cent ot the
Russian people. The other ten per
cent Is tho former propertied and
governing class. These are now prac
tically disfranchised. They are also
dispropertied. Naturally they are dis
pleased. They are using all their Influence
to overthrow tho soviet and bring
about some form of government that
will restore their wealth and power.
With this element, the ex-rich and
ex-nobles, Germany is plotting.
The fact that Germany has not
lived up to the terms ot; the Brest
Litovsk. treaty which was made by
the soviet government has embittered
tho soviet and the mass of tho Rus
sian people-. They are more anti-Ger
man today than they havo been for
many months, and it is urged on our
;overnment that we should take ad
vantage of this opportunity to show
our good wil for the Russian democ
racy and help brace up its attempts at
government, In order that all this in
fluence may he held on the sido of
the allies.
A recently returned official put the
matter this way:
Kct uriied Official Talks
"If we do nothing. that is, If wo
just let things drift we help weaken
tho Russian soviet government. And
that plays Germany's game.
'If we encourage counter revolu
tion, as the "Hrltlsli were tempted to
do, wo play tho German game. Ger
many is heart and soul with the pro
perty-owning class In their desire to
overthrow tho Bolshevik! experiment
in economic revolution. On the other
hand, if we help the Russians now we
will be doing more to keep the Ger
mans busy on the eastern front than
we could by sending a million sol
diers."
What Russia needs, it is explained,
Is financial help.
The whole machinery ot business
has collapsed.
Thore Is neither credit now money
and even primitive barter has largely
lapsed.
The result Is stagnation and star
vation where there is food almost
within reach.
A commission armed with credit
and good business advice could help
much. And any official encourage
ment from our government would
mean much more.
Finally It is urged that the soviet
Is the de facto government of Russia,
It was given six weeks to live when it
came into existence; it has lasted
over seven months. There Is nothing
to indicate that If may not go on In
definitely.

Lowered cfllcicncy cun often bo traced to
Constipation.
Do you tiro easily? Does your -work luck
interest? Is it hnrd to concentrate?
If so, your intestines mny be closed. This
often poisons the entire system. And
other ills result.
Constipation should bo treated knowingly.
Don't merely buy some remedy hastily
study the new nnd better wuy.
The crudest treatment is n violent cathartic.
It spurs the system into un ubnormul action.
Then comes chronic Constipation. The in
toitinos depend upon artificial nctivity.
All this is needless. All these old-fashioned
purgatives have been replaced.
Stunolujc is tho mime of n new and Jjreat cor
rective of intcstiuul debility,
Slunolax is u lubricant, not a cathartic. It
keeps tho walls of tho intestines clean nnd
healthy. It dissolves nnd carries owuy tho
treacherous poisons. It encourages the nor
mal muscular contractions of tho intestines.
Stunolnr is absolutely neutral tasteless,
odorless, colorless. It is devoid of dru&s.
It can bo taken in lnrfce orsmull doses -without
tho slightest injury. It passes through
the system without beinjj digested or
ubsorbed. ,
'
Stnnolux causes no violent, fcrippin& action.
Nor does it injure tho intestinal walls. It
soothes while it lubricates.
Tree yourself from Constipation now nnd
stay freed by keeping your intestines
lubricated with Stnnolux.
Your dru(V,ist bus Stnnolux, or will feet it.
One bottlu will convince.
