BETTER FEELING
(Continued From Page One.)
which was udoptod with your consent
and without the consent ot any of tho
Central American or South American
states. We said:
"'We aro going to be your big
brothor whother you want us or not.'
Socks Agreement
"We did not ask you whether this
was agreenblo to you. Wo said wo
are going to bo. Now that all Is
very well as far as protecting you
from ggresslon from the other side
of the water was concerned, but there
was nothing in It that protected you
from aggression from us, and I have
repeatedly seen an uneasy feeling on
the part of representatives of tho
states of Central and South America
that our self-appointed protection
might oo for our own benefit, and our
own interests and not for the intorest
ot our neighbors. So I have said:
" 'Let us have a common guaran
tee that all of us will sign a declara
tion of political independence and
territorial Integrity. Let us agree
that it any of us, the United States
included, violates the political Inde
pendence or territorial Integrity of
any of tho others, all the others will
jump In. This is tb kind of an
agreement that will have to be the
foundation of the future life of all
the nations.
"Peace can only come by trust. If
yon can once get a situation of trust,
then you have got a situation of per
manent peace. Therefore, everyone
of us owes it as a patriotic duty to his
own country to plant the seeds ot
trust and of confidence. Instead of
the seeds of suspicion."
In emphasizing the disinterested
ness of the United States in the world
war, the president said:
Policy of isiiitcrostclncss
"One of the difficulties that I ex
perienced during the first three years
of the war, the years when the Unit
ed States was not in the war, was in
getting the foreign offices ot Euro
pean nations to believe that tho Unit
ed States was seeking nothing for
herself, that hor neutrality was not
selfish and that if she came in she
would not come in to get anything
substantial out of tho war, any ma
terial object, any territory or trade
or anything clso of that sort. In
some of the foreign oTflcos there were
men who personally knew mo and
they believed, I hope, that 1 was sin
cere in assuring them that our pur
poses were disinterested, but they
thought that these assurances came
from an academic gentleman, remov
ed from the ordinary sources of infor
mation and speaking the Idealistic
purposes of the cloister. They did
not believe that 1 was speaking the
real heart of tho American people
and 1 knew all along that I was. Now
I believe that everybody who comes
Into contact with the American peo
ple knows that 1 am speaking their
purposes."
Russia Is Cited
As a concrete example tho presi
dent referred to his declaration that

"We cannot make anything out of

DO RED X WORK
Medford is always In the fore of
every good work, especially that
which pertains to war needs, and tho
winning of the war. Among Ihe many
excellent things w hich have expedited
matters In this direction Is that which
tho Roosevelt Parent-Teachers asso
ciation have just formulated. There
aro many mothers who have not oeen
able to work nt Red Cross headquar
ters because of the care of little ones,
altho tbey would liko to do so if they
could. They have tho chance now.
It has been arranged that every
Thursday from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m.
members ot the above society and
othor societies will be at the Presby
terian church to take caro of children
ot parents who would like to assist
in the work ot the Red Cross and
workers are always needed. Just
dress the children in their every day
play clothes, the plainer tho bettor,
and provide them a little luncheon,
and the ladies In charge will do the
rest. They will be well taken care
of, and will have tho freedom of the
park without danger and be taught
many helpful things. Now is your
chance to show your patriotism and
it will cost you nothing for this. Let
there be a hearty response to this
splendid offer, and the Idea may take
root In other parts of the city.
Much interest is being shown by
the citizens in the coming election
next Monday, June 17, of iwo mem
bers lo the school board to fill the
places of R. J. Fainter and W. A.
Folger, whose tonus expire. Mr. Palm
er is a candidate for re-election but
Mr. Folger, who was apiHiinted to fill
n vacancy in the board membership,
is not.
The only other candidates arc Ed
F. While, the real estate dealer, nnd
V. E. Conser, the east sido grocer.
A quiet campaign lias been in pro
gress in t'ue interests of the election
of Messrs. White and Conser. Mr.
White is ospeciully hacked up by the
residents of the Jackson school dis- j
trict, which district' has no member
onthe lioard. Those hack of the move- '
tuent are urging the election of Mr.
Conser chiefly because he would rep-1
resent the east side of the city'
which lias no resident represent ntivc
