.PARIS, Juno 1. The military crit
ics, says a Havas igeney reviewed
today, still view the situation as Be
rious, but consider the signs, incrcas
jngly reassuring." The most import
ant development U regarded as the
enemy's attempt to advance west
ward and push toward Paris, tints, it
is considered, revealing Jiis strategic
nteptions unmistakably.
In tho first shock of this new rush.
it is pointed out, the allies were oblig
cd to give ground in sonic places, but
they held their own on tho Aisno and
the Ourcq and their vigorous coun
tcr attacks arc considered a prelude
to tho stoppage of the enemy nd
Mi ince.
vith some tho most important port
of the battle is that with Noyon, or
tho region to tho south of it, on the
one end, and the district north of
Chateau Thierry, on the 'Marnc, on
the other. It is here that the German!
rush toward Paris demands undivid
ed attention. i
The military situation shows pro
gress for the allies, says the Temps,
because the enemy failed to make
gnins last night, although he re
doubled the violence of his attack.
"The mass of our reserves," it con
tinues, "has begun to take part in
the action. Just south of Soissons
our counter attacks have driven the
enemy back to the Criso river, which
flows into the Aisnc, and wo have re
taken the villages of Chaudun and
vierzy. further south the enemy
many times made futile efforts to nd-
vnnco through tho valley of tho
Ourcq."

Letters from Nurse Kate Buckley
to her sister ut Ruch:
My dear Sis and All:
At last we received our orders and

wore first 'assigned our state rooms.
I um in n room with three, a very nice
stateroom and quite comfortable.
First day in had to remain pretty
close to our rooms while nil were be
ing settled. Then the second day wo
were on deck und could watch them
loud the ship. Bright and early we
wcr.c sailing, but could hardly feel
the motion of the bout, the water was
so calm.
We are all fine and having n good
rest. We go to bed early, get up
early and eat three infills a day and
ood mculs, and I nra hungry all the
time.
Wo have an orchestra with our unit
so we have been having dances. We
stay on deck as much us we can. We
nro on our third day out and tho
water is not so calm and boat is
rocking some, so some are not feeling
so well today. Yours truly is O. K.
so far.
I didn't feel excited starting. I
guess I was ready so long that the
excitement wore off.
We cannot tell the name of the
boat we aro on so you will not know
until I get home unless you lire good
ucssers.
- I tried, to write to all before I left
but there were some I did not get
around to.
B y the time this is mailed we will
bo snfc on land.
Lovo to all. KATE.
May 3rd, 1018.
My dear Sis and All : ' '
I am just fine and enjoying the
trip, think I would have gotten fat
hud it been a longer sen voyage, for
I was hungry all the time and the
meals woro fine. Tell Lulu that we
had good coffee and all we wuutcd of
it, so my nerve was good nil tho way.
But nothing happened to upset my
equilibrium. I guess it will be hard
for you to believe that our trip was
so smooth.
Wo always got up early and walk
ed (lie deck before breakfast to got
the fresh air and get up an appetite
for breakfast. Then we walked the
deck after lireukfast and watched the
waves, for one does not get tired of
watching the frnvos.. Wo rend some
and gossiped n great deal, for waiit
of something to do.
Wo liked tho water, but all were
glud to sec the land, and it is pretty
this time of the year. The hills are
all green and the fields also. Wc
haven't been into tho town yet, but
they say it is a very pretty place.
Wo are not settled yet) but hope
to be soon. Wo don t know where ns
yet, but soiiiewhcro here ill Franco,
of course.
Our Idlers arc very unsatisfactory
for there are lots of things to write
about, but guess it will have to keep
unlit wc get home. I will try anil
write short letters often, but don't
know yet about mailing tbcni after
this. I know this will'go soon and J
mailed one on board.
I hope nil arc well at homo.

You and yours are cordially in

Evidence in plenty is available that
prosperity goes hand in hand with
payrolls.
Wherever n goodly nuinlier ot peo-
plo arc steadily employed at a good
wage, there you will lind a prosper
ous community.
Tho payroll dollar comes back into
circulation quickly nnd moves from
one business to another, one profes
sion to uifother und as it moves it
stimulates each nnd every one.
Oregon's payrolls arc now greater
than ever known. They are growing
greater every day.
The shipyardsa nd kindred indus
tries aro spreading millions of dol
lars into the hands of thousands of
workers.
The workers puss it along through
all the avenues of business nnd the
country is now whut we call "prosperous."
This wonderful example of the
benefit of payrolls should not be
without its moral.
What if shipbuilding would sud
lenlv cease? What would become of
the thousands now employed there?
What other linos of wage earning
would they take up?
In the midst of our pospcrity we
must he serious about this thing of
pnvroils.
There is a way to provide against
a possible cainuiiiv, inir every Mil
lion must do his or her duty. There
is no law to compel it ; it i s n mutter
for individual action.
Evcrv ritiy.cn must demand Ore
on fuctorv products keep up the
demand insist upon the merchant
trade stocking Oregon goods.
If vou do not increase production
by your demand of our factory pro
ducts, how can thev grow and pros
per and add ;norc und more people
to their payrolls and thus build up
big manufacturing slate?
It is your move, Mr. Oregon citi
zen. 1 1 s your jol to support Ure-
gon industries. Begin today.
