TELLS OF RETREAT
In a letter written April 17th to
his parents from the western front
Vernon Gamtt, who is sci vitig in
the U. S. ambulance corps, pays his
trlbu'.o to the wit.h unci righting
qualites of the common French sol
dier. Vernon has been In the midst
of a great battle. His letter in part
Is as follows: ' ,
"You doubtless were much disap
pointed and. surprised at the great
lioche advance, hut do not be
alarmed. Our morrow is coming.
During our retreat we had manv
thrilling experiences, some of which
I often wonder how we got out of.
but all's well that ends well and
so It did. Our noblo division which
fought so well at Verdun have said
as they did at that memorable de
fense, 'They shall not pass." I am
here to tell tho world that they did
not, try as they would.
"It gives me a sense of pride to
serve with such a noble division of
the hest army, man to man, in the
world, I hellove. They can talk or
the muscular Canadian, the gritty
Tommy; the dashing Australian, the
maclilne-Uke Herman and the deter
mined Sammy, hut I will take my
place beside a poor old bowlegged
iicarded Pollee with four or five
musetles across his back and a gun
at his side so long as he has to look
up to see the point of a bayonet. A
man as old as father, burdened with
four years of this terrible war, with
out many of the essentials his ully
comrades enjoy that's the man who
so nobly defended Verdun ,and It
was the same Poilee who saved Paris
from the despotic Huns a few days
ago 'by his stubborn counter-attacks
and defense. - .
"These noble creatures, small in
stature but big at heart, say little but
do much. In other words they are
known by their deeds and not by
boastful words. We have learned to
" know and love every one of them, but
under this terrible strain they are
fast diminishing in numbers. We
will move for a rest soon, when '60
per cent are evacuated. No more
unselfish ever.JJ.ved than gur. Trefoil
Pollees.
"I wish I could write you a few
particulars about the whole retreat
hut I am restricted. I know you
would be surprised. In spite of all
I admire every private and 'sub-officers
In the British lines. They sure
caught h . One I was talking with,
a machine gun operator, sald:v 'When
the bally Huns came over so fust,
so many you can't mow them down
with a machine gun. Every 20 feet
you've got to fall back or get run
over. We fell back.'
"The captured English guns from
the Prussians Is what did the act.
and those Tommies are doubly sure
nt having their own ammunition shot
at them. It Is very amusing to hear
them 'talk."

FOR AUTO TIRES
More bi'-r raises in the prices of
tires are regarded by those well post
ed in the automobile business as in
evitable, and it behooves all Med ford
car owners to lay in a yood supply
at present prices. The prediction
was made by 1'. It. Simmons of Chi
caj:o, general sales manager of tin
Perfection Tire and Rubber com
pany, during his recent visit in Med
ford that in two or three years he
cause of (lie scarcity of rubber, car
owners will he beiii;ing; for tires at
any price.
The overn:nenl, according; to Mr.1
Simmons is ijoing; lo take 7(1 per cent
of the tire output of Ibis country for
use in war esrviec. The jjovernmenl
has requisitioned all the rubber com
intf into the Cnited Slates and dis
tributed it lo the different rubber
companies according- lo their daily
capacity output, and no rubber com
pany can get another pound until the
next allotment is made.
Another reason for the recent rais
ed prices on tires is Ihe fact that
cotton fabric that goes into their
constrm-tion now costs 1'7 eenls a
pound as against a cost of i:t cents
a pound three months ago.
The average use of a tire on a
military vehicle nt the war front, Mr.
Simmons said, was only three days,
whereas the average life of a tire in
ordinary daily use is Itli.l days. With
Ihe American army to be increased
hy a million or more men it can read
ily he seen (hut lnosl of Ihe tires wil!
be needed for tile ureal ly increased
number of trucks, ambulances and
oilier military needs.
