XV Cross, who has recent l.v returned from a trip to the
battle, front, "is a rainbow toward which western Europe
looks as the sitfii of comfort, hope and victory." .
It is up to you and I to see that the promise, must not
fail. We are rushing our troops for the victory. AYe must
send the comfort and hope, with them and the Ked Cross
offci's tile opportunity. It is our messenger of cheer to the
stricken people of the devastated renins, to the wounded
and maimed of the battlefields.
"The. Ked Cross is human kindness organized." .'Its
message is the more important in lliat the enemy has
scrapped humanity in its war upon the world. In Europe,
the Ked Cross is a practical demonstration that the ideals
of Christianity have not been lost to the world. .
Germany's relapse to barbarism makes it the more vi
tal that America uphold the torch of civilization. Good
faith long since disappeared in ( lermany, chivalry has long
been a joke, religion lias become a perversion, truth is de
nied anil democracy become it crime. Force, has replaced
morals and submission is substituted for justice'. Against
the menace of ('rightfulness we send the Ked Cross, min
istering angel of mercy.
The need of the Ked Cross is made more urgent by the
policy of the Huns, seeking to destroy tile morale of the
resisi ing count rics. As .Mr. Devison says, "the dastardly,
unrighteous, cruel and devilish plan" of destroying civil
ian morale by bombing raids, "upon the theory that the
killing of four children out; of five will induce the mother
to implore her government" to make peace wjll fail, for
the American Ked ( 'runs aids in sustaining Hit! splendid de
fiance and courage of t he wronged people, l'y schools, ref
uges, tuberculosis cures, nurseries for children and of a
thousand other ways, the Ked Cross aids in maintaining
the fighting spirit of those'fighting our battles.
The Ked Cross subscribers draw dividends only in the
gratitude of the afflicted but they more than justify the
investment. Subscribe and subscribe liberally to this wor

NOT PLAYING POLITICS.
TUB appointment of Judge Hughes its investigator of
the aircraft program was an excellent one and could
not be improved upon. In every way he is qualified for
tho work. In addition it, insures the public of the intense.1
earnestness and sincerity of the'presidont in securing effi
ciency in winning the war.
It cannot be justly said that the president is playing
party politics in liis management of the war. He has sum
moned the best qualified in the nation; regardless of poli
tics to aid in defeating the Jlun. Here is a list of those
called to assist in important war work and their politics:

HEAR EXPERT ON
FEED OF COWS
Pasture j;rass is the ideal feed for
dairy cows, When abundant it pro
vides all the essentials necessary for
the production of milk except possi
bly in the ease of those cows which
have the ability to produce milk in ex
ceptionally liirfif amounts. It is nu
tritious, palatable, succulent and
provides a balanced ration. If pas
tures were abundant throughout the
year the average production of the
cows of the country would show a
Kreiil increase, ('nl'ortiiiiiitely, how
ever, in most communities pustules
supply feed ill abundance only dur
ing a compnrit, ivcy short period. As
the season advances and the dry sea
son approaches the pastures become
dry and the feed scanty. The inev
itable result is that the cow declines
in bolh flesh and milk production.
I'he lo?s is serious for not only are
the total cash returns much less but
the flesh is accompanied by n de
pression in general health that will
effect the cow during her entire lacta
tion period.
The cow that is well fed throughout
her entire lactation period is the one
that will show the greatest yield and
net profits,. Skimping the ration in
stead of being n saving proposition
is an expensive one. Dairymen are
more and more coming to realize the
importance of liberal feeding and are
providing a supply of green feed for
summer use, either green crops grown
for the purpose, or through summer
silage.
A succession of crops can be work
ed out for almost any community.
Kye, oats, Canada peas, clover, vetch,
millet, corn and roots are some of
the crops used. The summer silo,
however, is the most satisfactory
source ot feed for supplementing
pasture. The crop is- harvested at
least expense and is stored eluse to
stable or,. yard where needed, liyc,
outs and vetch nre some of the crops
used for this purpose. Corn silage
curried over from the pervious sea
son is used by many dairymen. The
summer silo has an important part to
play in producing dairy products
cheaply.
Thin impoiiaut subject will he con
sidered among others at the big dairy
men's meeting in .Mcdford on Hay
29. '
Speakers from the Oregon Agri
cultural college will be present, and
every dairyman should make an ef
fort lo be present. This meeting is
the last in the series that were ar
ranged by County Agent.
A good attendance at this meeting
will make it easier to arrange for
similar meetings in the future.
ENROLL WOMEN "
IN LAND ARMY
FDR ENCAMPMENT
Those In charge of organizing the
W'omon's Land Army In the valley,
and In conjunction with this thu agri
cultural camp for women and girls
to be started the first of June on the
Holloway orchard, are very much en
couraged over the Interest manl.'eat
od In the venture. The articles con
corning the projoct have been re
printed In Portland papers and ap
plications are being received from
out-of-town people who are anxious
to enlist in the movement.
As thU organization is to have Us
working headquarters In the valley,
it Is felt that the girls and women
here should lie given preference in
the matter of application for work
They are, therefore.' especially urged
to apply at the. office of the Fruit
Association, leaving their names and
addresses and the date at which they
will be available for work. All high
school girls wishing to join should
sign there or with the officers of the
Gl'ls Honor Guard.
licmamt for Workers
There is a demanil for workers
which must be met and the organi
zation wishes to be assured that it
will be able to place the number re
quired by the surrounding orchards.
If there are not enough local workers
it will 1e necessary to enlist women
and girls from outside the valley.
All who wish to work during the
summer, therefore, whether they are
Interested in the canfp or not, are
asked to enlist In order to insure
themselves work. This should be
done as soon as possible as tho orch
ard work begins soon.
The Woman's Land Army organi
zation will act as a medium between
tho employer and employe and will
arrange matters to the best advan
tage possible for both. Hours will be
agreed upon and the wage to be
paid; not less than two dollars for
an eight hour day Is expected to be
the standard. Also transportation
facilities will he arranged, and thru
a central organization much of the
lack of uniformity of conditions
which existed last 'year will bo elim
inated. .

Save Yourself in Dish Washing
The soap you use with the dishes seems a
little thing, but
Count the number of dishes you wash in
one day and multiply them by 365.
It's a real saving to use a soap that cuts grease
asspeedilyas Fels-Naptha. It means work fin
ished more quickly and with less effort. It
means , everything spotlessly clean.
Keep using Fels-Naptha with the dishes.
