The Northwestern Tuberculosis con
ference will be held In Portland, Oc
tober 15 and 1G, and Mayor C. E.
Gatea has appointed Mrs. Stewart
Patterson of Medford as a delegate
from Jackson county to this confer
ence. Some idea of the importance of
this worlt during the presont war may
be gleaned from the following extract
from a letter written by Mrs. Sadie
Orr Dunbar of Portland, secretary of
the Oregon association to Mrs. W. L.
Holloway of Medford, who is one of
th,e directors of the Tuberculosis Pre
vention association ot tile. Northwest,
.yid who has been very active in pre
vention work in Jackson county:
Oregon faces an appalling situation
if war returns our soldiers, ill of
tuberculosis. There are no beds,
available for such patients. We will
have to take them right back into
their own homes, or into ours. We
will have to have government aid, if
many soldiers return with this dread
disease. Tuberculosis will Increase
at home during war, as well.
The law, passed last January, per
mits county commissioners to spend
public money for county visiting
njurses. Would Jackson county be In
terested in securing at least one nurse
whose work could be combined with
school inspection, etc.
Your summary card of the survey
reads as follows:
Case records (completo histories) 32
Cases reported by physicians, but
not visited "by investigator 16
Arrested cases 27
Away for treatment 20
Deaths (1913-1916)..... 80
A

U This is only one disease. Your
nurse could do any public health
' ork. No money would bo spent
more wisely. A nurse would probab
ly cost $90 or $100 per month, with
somo allowance for traveling ex
penses. Your county could well af
ford to put $1500 into tho prevention
of disease.
Everyone who can is asked to at
tend tho conference which will be
hold at the Multnomah hotel. Rep
resentatives from 50 Oregon cities
will bo present, as the work is deemed
of tho utmost importance. Mrs. Hol
loway will attend as a representative
ot the national organization, and
other Medford and Jackson county
women are asked to bo present.
"Yours wns duly received in re
gard to the bass drum," rends a let
ter from Captain A. J. Vance of the
Seventh company, received by Mayor
C. E. Gates this morninsr, "and 1

hvay, is some bund.

How to Relieve Catarrhal
, Deafness or Head Noises
If you hnve catarrh, catarrhal deaf
ness or head noises caused by ca
tarrh, or if phlegm drops in your
throat and has caused catarrh ot the
Ptomach or bowels you will be glad
to know that theso distressing symp
toms may bo entirely overcome in
many instances by the following treat
ment which you can easily prepare In
your own home, at little cost. Secure
from Strang's Drug Store, Heath's
Drug Store, Haskln's Drug Store,
,Medford Pharmacy, West Side Phnr
macy, 1 ounce of Parniain (Double
'strength). This will not cost you
,)moro than 90c. Take this home and
add to It '4 pint of hot water and 4
ounces of granulated sugar; stir until
dissolved. Tako one tabiespoonful
four times a day. An Improvement
is sometimes noted after tho first
day's treatment. Ureathlng should
become-easy, while the distressing
head noises, headaches, dullnens,
cloudy thinking, etc., should gradual
' ly disapear under the tonic action of
It he treatment. Loss of pmell, taste,
defective hearing and mucus droppins
'in the back of the throat are other
I symptoms which suggest the presence
I of catarrh and which may often be
overcome by this efficacious treat
ment. If nearly ninety per cent, of
all ear troubles are caured by ca
tnrrh, there must bo many people
whoso hearing may be reslord by
this simple home treatment.

Muilford .Mail Tribune:
Here is my dollar for tobacco for
the boys who are fortunate enough
to go to France. I do not use to
bacco, but I know that to n man who
does it is a great comfort. Every
body is happy, up here in Columbia,
and we are seeing many things of
interest as well as learning to be real
soldier hoys. This army life is great.
All you have to do is work.
I hope my dollar will be tiie means
of making some lonely hoy happy for
a short time.
PVT. CLAREXOf; S. CRAMER,
Seventh Co., U. S. X. (i.. Fort Colum
bia., Wash., Oct. 3, 1!17.
Every soldier gets lonely and
homesick sometimes. The hefirt
t hut heats beneath bronze buttons
and khaki is still only human, of
course. And when one of our hoys
gets that lump in his throat which
he just can't swallow, there seems to
be nothing that helps quite so much
as a good, cool, soothing smoke the
kind of smoke he used to havo back
home.
Good smokes have been pretty
scarce in the trenches. Hut we've
made it so easy for the folks at home
to send on the right kind the boys
want that now there's really no ex
cuse any more for them to be with
out them.
Twenty-five cents sent to our To
bacco fund will purchase almost
twice ns many smokes ns you cun buy
yourself over the counter. They
come packed in n nice little kit, ready
for sending; and in that kit is a post
card; stamped and addressed to the
person who gave the quarter.
The French and 'American govern
ments and the Red Cross help ns do
this. The tobacco is admitted duty
free over there and the American
stamp brings back the message to
you, direct from the happy man who
received your smokes.
And when you read that soldier's
message, you W'ill say that it is the
biggest quarter's worfh of satisfac
tion you ever got for the money. Try
it and see for yourself.
