THREE FIREMEN MEET
DEATH IN FIRE TRAP
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. G. Three
firemen, one nn assistant chief, were
killed, and seven others seriously In
Jurcd late Friday In the down-town
district, when they were trapped tin
dor the collapsed walls of a throe-
story frame lodging house, destroyed
by fire.
First Assistant Fire Chief Stephen
u. ittisseu was dead when lie was
dragged from under the debris. Wil
Hum Allen died on tho way to a hos
pital. Seven others wero taken to
hospitals for treatment. It was said
that none of them wero In Immediate
danger tonight.
Thirty roomers were taken from
tho building by tho police, soldiers
and sailors, before the collapse.
According to the pollco, the fire
started In a building next to the lodg
Ing house, among somo stored hay.
It spread rapidly and the lodging
house Boon was destroyed. The build
Ing In which tho fire was said to havo
stnrtod was partly destroyed.
Thirty-five firemen were In the
vicinity of tho Iniildlng when a wall
and tho roof foil In.
Tho toll of dead was raised to three
lute tonight, when firemen dlseov
erect the hotly of J nines Collins, one
of their number, at the bottom of the
ruins.

stato commerce commission by Chair
man F. J. Miller of the Oregon pub
lic servlco commission, against a ter
minal charge on fruit shipmoiits from
Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Cali
fornia that has been declared by the
F.rlo railroad for Its Now York ter
minal. Mr. Miller loft today for
Washington to attenti tho convention
of the National Association of Rail
road Commissioners, and will make
the protest while there. Tho termin
al charge on western fruit Is 22.r0
and $25 a carload.
Ho will protest also against the
new minimum loading of tiO.OOO
pounds Instead of 3S.0O0 pounds es
tablished by trans-continental roads
for lumber shipments from the west.
A minimum of 31.000 pounds Is re
tained for tho south and southwest
which also have the advantage of a
ten-cent differential ill freight rates
into Chicago.

musicians, nnd its leader is Wilson
Waito, the widely known tooter of
the cornet in Medford bunds of past
history.
Ihe Seventh company boys have
had the hand organized for some
time and bad all the necessary in
struments except n bass drum. In
this dire dilemma the officers and
men turned to their mid tried and true
friend, the mayor, to help them out.
For some time Mayor Gates has
been trying to raise money to buy the
Seventh company "a bass drum. He
also tried to have the drum of the
lute defunct band of Medford, which
is lying- in storage, sent to the com
pany. All his efforts were in vain.
He worked at the job so hard that he'
contracted a severe attack of drum
ilis, which did not end until Thurs
day, when he, in a pnroxysin of the
disease, sat down and wrote Captain
Vance to go ahead find order a brand
new drum from any old place, us lie
would see that it was paid for.
"I'll raise that twenty dollars in
some way yet," said Mavor Gntes to
day. I just couldn't hear to have
those boys suffer for Jack of a
drum."

not until this afternoon that defi
nite news that ho would stop was re
ceived in a telegram received by Ex
alted Ruler (Jus 'Newbury. Mr. Hop
per'B visit to the valley, however, will
be one of only a fow hours.
