The letter, dnted Septem ber 20, is as follows : "I will take advantage of the Sat urday hulf holiday from military du ties to acknovv ledge your very kind letter to the men of the Seventh com pany accompanying the gift of hooks, ond to express the appreciation of the entire company for your kind and generous remembrance. ' Such let ters as you have written to them are not often received by a military com pany, I imagine, and it is most gnit ifvins to know that one of the friends of the company has their welfare at heart to nn extent that prompts such splendid advice as you have given them. I'pon receipt of your letter T read it to the entire assembled com pnny, nnd it appeared to leave a deep impression on them. Company Is Healthy. "I believe you will he interested in learning in regard to the semi monthly physical examinations given the men. along the lines touched upon in your letter, and it will be gratify ing, I know, to you to lenm thnt in these regular inspections since com ing to Kort Columbia not one case of venereal disease has been found in the Seventh company. I understrnd that our company has established n record in this respect in these de fenses. "Neither lias there been a single case of intoxication charged ngninst a member of the company another record, at least at Kort Columbia, where members of both of the other companies have had cases of court martini nnd summary court trials of their men, or penalties assessefl against them. "o Personal Kncounters. "I might go further nnd say that there has not been a single instance of versonnl encounter between nny of the men of the Seventh company, v. hich betokens a spirit of comrno.c ship not always found in a military company. To such splendid let:crs as you have written to us can no doubt be attributed in no small de gree this excellent showing. To know that there are friends at home wish ing for ami believing iu their upright ness cannot fail to produce a re sponse in the right direction on their part, '1 believe you will nlso be interest ed in knowing something iihonl t ie church services which are held ii-re each Sunday for t e benefit of the men. OCTOBER FIRST OF SIXTEEN T The first of the sixteen military trains:hat will pass thru this city in theVext few days en route bearing the third contingent of California's drafted men to the American Lake, Wash., cantonment, went thru Med ford nt ;1a'l(l o'clock this morning. The soldiers breakfasted nt Ashland. Two more trains will go thru this after noon nnd will make short stops nt Grants Pass, whererif cheon will be served the soldiers, i , John M. Scott, general passenger agent of the Southern Pacific, who was in the city a few minutes this morning while en route from San Francisco to Portland, said that dur ing the moving of this contingent of 9000 or more troops there would-be far less disorganization of regular passenger and freight service than two weeks ago, and that the military trains will lie handled more expedi tiously. "All around, we have profited by our exjierieuee in handling the first big military contingent, and we now have things so systematized that there will be little confusion or de lay," said Sir. Seott. "Indeed. I don't expect to be on the job this time nt all in looking after the handling of the trains." Most of the moving troops will be served meals at Roseburg and Al bany on reaching those cities, while many will be fed at Ashland and Grants Pass. The quartermasters' department of the army did not eten make an in quiry this time as to whether Med ford could feed any of the soldiers. The geographical location of this city and the times the military trains reach here make it inadvisable to stop trains here for meals. Ashland, being the end of the division and lo cated nt the foot of the Siskiyou, i-c a natural stopping place to dine the soldiers.
