Medford. ladies to aid St. Mary's

ternoon in the prettily decorated mu
sic hall of the nendemy. Adding much
to the delightful ufternoon at cards
and tea, were the greatly appreciat
ed musical numbers: Valse Lonte, by
Demuth, and Berceuse by Tor Anlin ;
violin selections by Miss Ruth Camp
hell, who was accompanied by iss
l.ucile Koontz; Galop di Bravura by
Knabel; piano duct by the Misses
Helen Heddy, Eucile Koontz, Neva
Samuels, Jean Steel, Harriet Ward
and Wiunifred Clancy; the delightful
Hawaiian melodies, Missouri, Mauna
ICea, She Sang Aloha, and Aloha Oe
by the Ukulele-Bnn.jo club, and "The
Star-Spangled Banner," a chorus.
Honors at hridge were won by
Mrs. II. E. I lake, who received a
beautiful hand-painted vase; at five
hundred by Mrs. Wills of Crater
lake, n hand-painted tea tile.
Mrs. 0. J. Pntton is being congrat
ulated on the very pleasant afternoon
she provided for the ladies, while
netting over .-" for the acadeiuv.
The Methodist Ladies' Aid met
Wednesday, September 'Jli, at the
church parlors. President Mrs. Min
cer took charge of the business ses
sion. Work for the coiuiii" year was
enthusiastically planned. Commit

Much has been said and written of
the various qualifications which are
included in forming a desirable loca
tion in which to have one's home in
regard to our "own home town." Of
our paved streets, good schools, cos
mopolitan residents, climate, literary
and musical culture, etc., hut has
enough emphasis been accorded the
fact of Medford being one of the best
show towns on the coast, doubtless
the best of its size, location consid
ered, of any in the weslf ' Some two

come to this smaller place in the far

waiting for admission, no jostling
crowd just tin evening pleasurable
in every way."
Our local theater was opened with
an artist beloved for many years,
Miss Maude Adams, nnd following
attractions have not been disappoint
ing. Last spring our gratitude was
due Mr. George Andrews for the
visit of the New York Symphony or
chestra concert. Similar sentiment
can now bo expressed to Mr. Hunt
for the rare treat in store, La Scala
Opera company in "Carmen." An
opera is many things in one n
drama, a vocal and an orchestral
concert. "Carmen" appeals to ev
eryone. The music haunts and fas
cinates. From the fanfare of the
arena, disclosing the motive of the
toreador, the principle theme, that
of Carmen, the fortune-telling duet
and the exquisite purity of the aria
for Micbaela. The music is abso
lutely original, and tho the story, like
all the grand operas, is sombre to an
extent, tne very attractive stage set-

intense interest aroused and sustain-
ed thruout the entire performance is j
the explanation for the deserved
popularity.
For those who may not be familiar
with the entire story, the following
brief (synopsis is given. '
"Curnieji" bus its opening in n pub

young brigadier, keeps' guard.
Micaela, a peasant girl whom he lov
ed in his village home, comes to seek
him with n message from his mother.
As Jose appears the girls stream out
from the cigarette factory.
Carmen, a gypsy, reckness and bp
witching, is their lending spirit in
love and adventure, Heedless of the
passing throng of suitors and at
tracted by the handsome young sol
dier, Carmen throws him n flower,
leaving him dnzed and bewildered nt
her beauty anil the fascinating dash
of her dark eyes.
A moment later a slabbing affray
with a rival factory girl leads to the
gypsy's arrest and she is placed in
cure of Jose himself. A few more
smiles and softly spoken words from
the fascinating Curnicn, nnd he is
persuaded to allow her to escape.
There is a sudden struggle and con
fusion, the soldier lets go his hold,
nnd the bird hits flown.
Act II Act two takes place in the
tavern of Lillas Pnstin. a resort of
gypsies, smugglers and questionable
characters generally. Here arrives
F.scamiilo, the toreador, amid the ac
clamations of the crowd, and he, like
the rest, offers his lioiuukc to Car
men. Meanwhile the two smugglers,
Dancairo and Remeiulnd... have an
expedition afoot and need Carmen to
accompany them. But she is await
ing the return of the young soldier,
who, as a punishment for allowing
her to escape, had gone to. prison
nnd will not depart until she has seen
him.
The errivnl of Jose leads to an
ardent love scene between the two.
Carmen dances her wild gvpsy meas
ure before him: vet, in the midst of
it all, be hears the regimental trum
pets sounding the retreat. While
Carmen bids him remain nud join
her, the honor of n soldier urues him
to return. The arrival of his cap
tain, who orders him hack, decides
Jose. He defies his officer, who is

his recipient for Carmen.
Act 111 The next scene finds Jose
with the smugglers in a roekv camp
in the mountains. The career of a
bandit, however, is one to which a
soldier docs not easily succumb. His
distaste offends Carmen, who scorn
fully bids him return home, she also
foreseeing in gypsv fashion with the
cards that they will end their careers
tragically together. In the midst of
this strained situation two strangers
arrive: Escnmillo, the toreador, who
has also followed Carmen, and
Micueln. with a message from Jose's

They soon meet, and the scene be
tween the gypsy and the maddened
soldier is a short one. The jealous
Jose appeals to her to return to him,
hut she refuses with a scorn, altho
she knows it means death. In a rage
Jose stabs her, and thus the end
eomes swiftly, while within the arena
the crowd is heard acclaiming the
triumph of Kscauiilto.

operetta that was staged at the Ar
mada on Tuesday evening of this

dren carried out the wonderful fairy

their instructor, who must possess a
wonderful amount of patience as well
as a great amount of ability."
