'THE , SCOURGE OF GOD'
A V account of their campaign of f rightfulness, their bar
barity and atrocities, the Germans liave won the
nickname, of "Huns" from the allied soldiers at the front,
because it was necessary to turn back the pages of history
fifteen hundred years to the days of Attilla and the Hun
invasion to find similar instances of savagery.
In 372 the Huns, an Oriental horde of barbarians, in
vaded Europe from their settlements in the steppes lying
north of the Caspian. They first conquered the various
nations along the Volga and Don, then the kingdom of the
Ostrogoths, north of the Danube, and were in frequent con
flict with the If oinans. Under Attilla, in the middle of the
fifth century Constantinople was attacked and a large
ransom exacted from the eastern Roman empire. The
fierce tribesmen conquered Greece, : pushed eastward
across the Rhine and the Seine, where progress was

ran Italy, and the fleeing inhabitants took refuge in the

Venice. Pope Leo I induced the invader to grant peace at
the gates of Rome. Upon the death of Attilla, the huge

slain in the rout of the Huns in Pannonia.

Under his Teutonic name of Etzel he plays a great part in
Teutonic legend, but his historic lineaments are greatly
obscured. He was short of stature, swarthy and broad
chested, with a large head, snub nose and deep-set eyes
Attilla personifies the triumph of the sword.
The name of Huns was applied to the Germans as a
term of derision and reproach, but it is evident that the
Huns arc the real models which guide the kaiser in his
career of conquest, and that he hopes to live in history as
a second Attilla. He will realize'his ambition.
That Attilla is thc-kaiscr's hero is shown by the address
he made German troops seventeen years ago, when they
were departing from Bremerhaven to suppress the Box
era rebelhoii in China. Among other remarks, the kaiser
said: .
. "If you meet the enemy, you will defeat him, give no
quarter, make no prisoners; let whoever falls in vour
hands be doomed. Just as a thousand years ago the Iluns
under their King Etzel (Attilla), made for themselves a
name which to.this day is a mighty one in tradition, so may
your appearance make the name German bo feared for a
thousand year,s in China, so never again will a Chinaman
dare to look askance at any German."
If the "allies" be substituted for the name "China
man the same spepch might have been made for the pres
ent war. The. same sentiment of savagery and blood lust
governs the kaiser and the German army, the same ruth
Jessness and utter disregard of humanity, in their war
upon civilization, as governed Attilla and his barbarian
hordes in their sacking of Europe. : ':

scourge of God," or of the devil, upon suffering human
ity, and for a thousand years to conic will be, execrated and

has tainted the German people with the mark of the beast

We regard these men and women as
traitors to the republic; we regard
them as traitors to the great cause
of Justice and humanity. This war
is a war for the vital Interests of
America. When we fight for Ameri

cowardice and a betrayal ot this
country and of mankind to accept any
peace except the peace of overwhelm
ing victory, a peace based on the com
plete overthrow of the Prussianized
Germany of the Hohenzollerifs.
We hold that the true test ot loyal
Americanism today is effective service
against Germany. We should exert as
speedily as poslble every particle of
our vast lazy strength to win the tri
umph over Germany. Therefore we
should demand that the government
act at once with unrelenting severity
against the traitors here at home,
whether their treasonable activity
take the form of editing and publish
ing newspapers, of uttering speeches,
or of Intrigue and conspiracy.
We must have but one flag. We
must also have but one language.
That must bo the language of the Dec
laration of Independence, of Wash
ing's Farewell Address, of Lincoln's
Gettysburg Speech and Second Inaug
ural. We cannot tolerate any attempt
to oppose or supplant the language
and culture that has come down to
us from the builders of this republic
with the language and culture of any
European country. 'The greatness of
this nation depends on the swift as
similation of the aliens she welcomes
to her shores. Any force which at
tempts to retard that assimilation
process is a force hostile to tho high
est interests of our country. It is
a force, which, If allowed to develop
will, for the benefit of this group
or that, undermine our national In
stitutions and pervert our national
ideals. Whatever may have been our
judgment In normal times we are
convinced that today our most dan
gorous foe Is the foreign languago
press and every similar agency such
as tho German-American Alliance,
which holds the alien to his former
associations and thru them to his for
mer allegiance. We call upon all
loyal and unadulterated Americans
to man the trenches against this ene

WASHINGTON, Sept. 19. -How is
Unclp Sam's aviation program pro
gressing?
Are the signal corps and the air
craft production board co-operating
to push the ?C-1 0,000,000 airplane
program at top speed so America will
do her full share next summer in
binding the kaiser's troops?
The signal corps and tho aircraft
board are too busy to tell what they
are doing. They are saying littlo
but sawing wod. Tho old Southern
Railway building, In which all the
aviation work Is centered, gives a
stronger Impression of real efficiency
than almost any other in Washington.
Four Lines of Progress.
Progress is along four main lines:
Construction of flying fields; train
ing of aviators; manufacture of train
ing planes; and development of fight
ing planes.
Completion of flying fields has
been delayed by the diversion of men
and materials to rush tho army can
tonments; but with tho release of can
tonment labor the fields will be com
pleted almost as soon as originally
designed. Twenty-one aro now fin
ished or under construction.
Aviators' training is proceeding
with speed. The "ground schools,"
for recruits' preliminary and tech
nical work, are located at eight of
the great universities and technical
schools. Nearly 1000 graduates
leave for the flying fields every
mouth.
Thousands Training.
In addition hundreds aro constant
ly being trained In private aviation
schools by the airnjane companies.
These numbers will be greatly In
creased before the end of the year.
It is safe to say ot least 10,000 Ameri
can pilots will be ready to receive
their final Instruction In France by
next summer. -'
All the manufacturing flcllitics
readily available for airplane build
ing are now concentrated on training
planes, essential in producing" fight
ing plane pilots, but the deliveries
are still considerably behind the de
mand. Within 30 days, however, the
output of training planes will be more
than doubled, and from that time
there should bo no delay In obtain
ing them.
