TEXAS GOVERNOR
A TIP TO CHICAGO
AT STATE COST
AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. IT. "I call
upon tbe God of Heaven to strike me
4ead before this assemblage If I do,
not speak the truth when I say that
J. never Intended to make a ulckei,
even a cent, off the state money in
jhe Temple State bank."
This was the statement of James
E. Ferguson today while testifying at
ills impeachment trial before the sen
ate high court, regarding deposit of
some $40,000 of Canyon City normal
insurance money lu tbe Temple state
bank in which he was a large stock
holder. .
Denies All Charges.
The governor took the stand soon
after the senate high court convened
today and by .noon had testified re
garding three of the 21 charges
against him. W. A. Hanger, the gov
ernor's chief counsel, took up the
charges tn order. The three consid
ered this morning were .that the gov
ernor applied $5600 ,of Canyon City
normal money to a personal obliga
tion; that be deposited -Canyon City
normal money In the Temple State
bank for profit and that he -borrow
ed from the Temple institution In ex-
cess of the limit allowed by law, even
tho, as governor, he was sworn to en
force the law.
- ' The igovernor said be was abso
lutely unaware until the July grand
Jury investigation, that the 5000
had been charged to his official ac
count. He was indicted by the grand
Jury (or alleged misappropriation of
state funds. . t
Intended Xo Profit,
'i The governor said he never intend
e to profit from .the deposits In the
Temple bank. Regarding the third
charge, he said, when his "voreline"
grew large, he consulted with the
Temple bank officials and steps were
taken to adjust his affairs.
i The governor introduced his tes
timony with a narrative of his careen
from the time he started as a .cotton
plckeor and mule driver, until he be
came the state's chief executive.
GERMAN NOTE TO SWEDEN
(.Continued from Page One.)
Hjnlmar -Branting, the Swedish so
cialist leader, was the chief speaker
at a .meeting which was attended by
45,000 socialists. , At the conclusion
of the address the following reaolu
tlon was passed:
"Events of the last few days show
-how the leading circles of Germany
ruthlessly have misused the careless
confidences of tbe two Swedish gov
ernments -which directed the policy
of Sweden, during -the war period.
"This meeting therefore, empha
sizes the determination to maintain a
nrrect attitude which is -felt by all
the Swedish people. We realize with
indignation and humiliation that our
good .name has been Jeopardized .by
the conduct of a few men. Obvious
ly the nation's fortunes cannot con
tlnue In the hands of these few men
who favor such systems and meth
ods."

PARIS
Tills map helps explain why London, further distant, suffers more
Minn Paris, from German air raids.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 17. London
and all England are at the mercy of
periodic visitations of frlghttulness
from German air raiders.
Paris and France are practically
immune.
Why?
Is it because British airmen are in
ferior and French airmen superior?
Is the kaiser venting his spleen on
the 'aroh enemy," England, and Blow
ing merqy to France.?
Or has the kaiser some great stra
tegic plan?
No!
Geography, and geography alone.
Look at tb.e map.
From the German airplane bases
at Zeebrugge and Ostend on the Bel
gian coast to London is 130 miles,
little more than an hour's flight.
From the German front to Paris is
only .75 miles.
But in the flight to London tho
first 90 .miles is over the water, with
little danger of attack and no danger
of detection except wireless messages
from patrol boats and seaplanes.'
Even if the German air raiders are
sighted the second they cross the
coast line, yiere are only 20 minutes
to mobilize British airplanes to repel
the attack. This would be enough if
it were centaln London would be the
point of attack; but there are scores
of other points besides London mil
nitions plants, army and navy bar
racks, and Industrial towns within
easy striking distance.
Generally the German bombs have
done their deadly work before the
British planes can locate and engage
them, and then It Is a running fight
with all the odds against the pursu
ers. Now look at the French map. It
Is only 40 minutes' flight to Paris;
but see how conditions differ.
Tbe second a squadron of German
planes takes the air, they are spotted
compauled her as far as Eugene,
where she will attend the V. of O.

UNSHAKEN TESTIMONY
Time is tho test of truth. And
Doan's Kidney Pills have stood the
test in Medford. No Medford resl-:
dent who suffers backache, or an
noying kidney and bladder Ills cun
remain unconvinced by this twice-;
told testimony.
Mrs. Wm. Charley, 30! N. Grape
st., Medford, says: "My kidneys did
not act right at all. Besides that I
had much pain In my back and some
times, I could hardly bend or straight
en up. At night, it bothered me, too,
and often I couldn't sleop. I tried
plasters and liniments for my back
and medicines but none of them help
ed me any. It was while I was feel
ing 111 and discouraged Unit I heard
of Doan's Kidney pills and bognn
taking them. In less than two weeks,
I felt better. I took In all four boxes
when I felt well." (Statement given
Sept. 14, 1907.)
On March 10, 1910, Mrs. Charley
said: "I recommend Doan's Kidney
Pills just as highly today as I did
several years ago. I still consider;
them a medlclnd of merit and when
ever- it Is necessary for mo to take
a kidney remedy I use them, for I
know they are most reliable."

by tho French or British fliers, who
can mobilize at any point on the front
an airplane squadron of equal
strength in less time than it takes to
tell it.
Then the German planes must
cross the Franco-British trendies
and run the gauntlet of anti-aircraft
guns. Then for 75 miles they must
fly over French soil with the alarm
spread by telegraph and hundreds of
French planes taking the air from the
reserve airdromes and flying schools
all the way to Paris.
A fine chance they have of reach
ing Paris in sufficient numbers to
do any damage! And a great chance
to return to tell the tale!
