FOR ARMED SHIPS
BE
WASHINGTON, Aug. 23. As a re
sult of the official report on the subr
marlne' destruction of the American
tank steamer Campana, which said
the gun crew's supply of shells ran
out in the midst of the fight, the
amount of ammunition supplied to
armed merchant ships will be dou
bled. The Campana had . 180 shells.
Naval officers have not accepted as
conclusive the unofficial report that
the failure of the gunners of the Cam
pana to strike the submarine was due
to tho superior range of the subma
rine's guns, but believe It more prob
able that it was.a case pt low visibil
ity, making the small attacking craft
an exceedingly bad target. It Is also
pointed out that the speed of the
tanker was not great, giving to the
submarine an advantage. ,
The Campana's captain and five of
the naval crew were captured and
taken on the submarine. Reports
have said the submarine was later
sunk by a French cruiser.
