The rights of free speech and free press do not confer
the license to adhere to the cause of tlie nation's enemies
and give them aid and comfort. 'The adherence to the
enemy may be advocacy of the enemy, it may be opposi
tion to public measures taken for national defense, it may
be clandestine and secret support it is" none the less
treason.
Jf citizen or alien denounces the United States he is
put in jail or interned as an enemy. Yet United States
senators, like La Follette and Reed and journalists like
Hearst, consider theiliselves immune and publicly do what
they can to aid and comfort the enemy and embarrass the
government and keep tlie country unprepared.
La Follette and Reed are no" better pacifists than
Bryan, but much less patriotic. "When war was declared,
Bryan volunteered his services to the nation, ceased his
peace palaver and has done his might to aid in prepara
tion for a vigorous and victorious war, while La Follette
and I feed have done their mite to aid and comfort tlie en
emy. Hearst, who has always been a jingo and clamored
for war thru his newspapers, has done his best to oppose,
disorganize and create discontent at home and comfort its
enemies abroad.
There is no danger of losing any of our democracy. The
war will increase it, even tho it necessarily temporarily
increases the l owers of the executive. The bogies of con
stitutional infringement and dictatorship and loss of free
speech and pm s ;u e raised by German sympathizers, as
by the I. W. W., to extenuate their own sedition.
The nation is at war for its existence we cannot af-

A X 'Amsterdam dispatch quotes Deputy Loringhovcn
as uttering the following in his review of three years
of war during the patriotic celebration in the reichstag:
"If. nevertheless, these unevampleed German successes which in earlier
times would long ago have brought peace, have not carried us any farther,
it is because tho general world political and economical situation oter.itss
only In favor of our enemies who have been able to enlist help from their
ever-growing number of allies. Tills pld has enabled them to carrr on the
war until the present day and so it has come about that our soldiers heve
been really cheated ouof the fruits of their victories." ,
Germany cannot reap the benefits of her victories,
because she is trying to put over a program that might
have been acceptable to the world in the dark ages, but is
univi'i-sally rejected in the twentieth century.
As nation after nation realizes the real aim and pur
pose of Germany, the conquering of the world and the en
slavement and vassalage of the various nations as they
realize that German autocracy is in reality warring
against humanity, nation after nation,' in ever increasing
numbers, will join the ranks of her enemies, until Ger
many faces a world in arms. .
Germany is fighting not only the armed forces, but the
moral forces of mankind, which will always cheat her out
of her victories, for the world will not again be ruled by
terrorism. Her medieval creed that military might is
right, her r.uthlcssncss and barbarity are repellant and
abhorrent to a civilization having its ideals . in justice,
equality and liberty. ,

Lester P. Barlow
An aerial bomb, invented by Lester
P. Barlow, promises to be one of
America's deadliest contributions, to
tho war.
The government is said to have
paid Barlow foO.OOO for his Inven
tion.
'No other type of bomb can compare
with Barlow's new death dcalor, ac
cording to Representative Tllson of
Connecticut, a member of the mili
tary affairs committee.
The missile Ib dropped from flying
machines. In recent tests it was
found to have destroyed everything
within a radius of 300 feet. Even
half a mile away Its effect was
deadly.
The various features which standi
the bomb as an unusually ingenius
contrivance cannot be discussed dur
ing war times.
Barlow perfected his weapon while
he was serving in Villa's army during
the days of the Mexican's fame.. He
was In command ot the aviation
corps.
The Inventor also served In the U.
S. navy, enlisting as a coal passer and
advancing to rank of first-class elec
trician. He Is a native of Pennsylvania.

ment will be reached sbortly between
the neutral powers and the export
council regarding food shipments un
der guarantee of their non-export to
Germany. Replies have been received
from many neutrals to which the state
department sent requests for informa
tion regarding requirements and what
assurance they were prepared to give
that the food would not reach Ger
many.
The state department's memoran
dum said that the United States held
as its first duty the supplying of food
to the allies and that If this country
undertook to supply neutrals, it must
mean in many commodities, either a
deprivation of the allies, further sac
rifice upon the part of the American
people or a diversion of labor and pro-
; ductlvity from the necessities of war.
Neutral governments were asked to
stimulate production of foodstuffs,
secure all available supplies from oth
er quarters abroad, and criminate
wastes and excess consumption.
Attention was called to the fact
that if there are insufficient supplies
for the American people and their al
lies alone, the I'nited States could not
be expected to part with food supplies
other than in such minimum amounts
as would make up the deficiency In
the food values arising after the most
intensive endeavors by neutrals. In
determining this minimum it was felt
that the pre-war Imports are no long

cause more intense production and re
duced consumption rendered such cal
culations Inapplicable.
