LADIES TO PROVIDE
SEVENTH COMPANY
At a meeting held In the public li
brary Wednesday atternoon, an
gantlvatlon, to'be known as the ",Sol
dlers' Auxiliary of Medford," was
0rmod far the purpose of maintaining
the mess fund of the Seventh com
pany, and to extend a similar service
to the boys who have gono from our
community "and vicinity Into other
branches of the service. The general
purpose of the organization Is stated
In the constitution adopted at yester
day's meeting to be "to provide for
such comfort and necessities of those
who enlist In any branch of the serv
ice from our vicinity as may not be
provided by the government or by oth
er societies already in existence.',' The
membership is to embrace the parents
of recruits, all such being eligible to
membership, and others who may be
Interested In tho work undertaken by
the organization. Membership In the
organization may be obtained by ap
plication to the chairman of the mem
bership committee, Mrs. Vance, and
by payment of the initiation fee of
fifty cents.
Story of Organization.
The meetings held'during the week,
and the formation of the organization
yesterday to fill the gaps left between
the activities of other societies for
our soldiers, was the outgrowth of ef
forts begun by Mrs. Alan Bracklnreed
a short time before to arrange a con
cert to provide funds for the Seventh
company's .mess fund. In the course
of this work, the desirability of such
an organisation as the Soldiers' Aux
iliary, as a permanent affair, became
evident, and yesterday's meeting and
the formal launching of the organiza
tion, was the result. -
The officers chosen for the first
term are Mrs Bracklnreed, president;
Mrs. B. Oa Clark, first vice-president:
Mrs. Deuel, second vice-president;
Mrs. R. L. Wilson, corresponding sec
retary; Miss Brault, recording secre
tary; Mrs. C. E. Gates, treasurer; Mrs.
Mears. chairman finance-committee;
Mrs. Vance, chairman membership
committee; Mrs. Frank McKee, chair
man entertainment committee. The
other charter members who took part
in the formation of the organization
aro Mesdames Vilas, Heath, G. E.
Johnson. Alford,' Ames, Sweat and
Gribble. ......
Copies of the auxiliary's constitu
tion and by-laws and charter member
ship list have been placed at the Com
mercial Club, public library and Med
ford Book store by the membership
committee, where the membership list
can be signed by any person who may
be Interested in the organisation's
purposes. It is planned to hold month
ly meetiugs of the membership. A
very urgent Invitation is extended es
pecially to the mothers of recruits to
add their names to the membership
list, as this Is Intended to be largely
their organization, for the benefit of
their boys.
More Concerts Comimjt.
In addition to the concert already
under way, which will be given In the
near future, other activities for the
comfort of the Seventh company boys
on their way to encampment are be
ing planned, and preparations made
for a definite program of work for the
year. One of the fvatnres of the work
planned for will be to keep In close
communication with the Seventh com
pany thru a correspondence arranged
for between Captain Vanco and the
corresponding secretary of the acriil
ary. Mrs. R. L. Wilson, who will also
keep In touch with our recruits in
other branches of the service.
As a part of the program of service,
the teaching of French to the mem
bers of the Seventh company will be
begun today by Mrs. Brackihreed. as
sisted by Miss Brault and Mrs. Crib
ble. It is hoped there will be time
enough before the company Jeaves
Medford to give the boys a good start
toward the acquirement of a speaking
knowledge of the language, which
they caa follow up under other In
structors In camp: the government
has already found It necessary to Is
sue a special appeal for French-speaking
recruits and volunteers for In
struction ia the language, and this
necessity will Increase with the num
ber of our soldiers sent to France.
A general meeting of the members
of tho auxiliary will be held at the
pablic library on Saturday afternoon
at 4 o'clock.
