50 FOREST FIRES
Within tlie past Iwo days over
fifty small forest and brush fires
have been started in Jackson county
by lightning striking trees in Ihe for
ests. These niitry fires were under
control before tlicv became very se
rious, but only by the hardest kind of
work nn the part of ihe fire wardens
and the forestry service employ m.
The fires were started in vli.ions
parts of the county's timbered dis
tricts, nnd then! were ninny similar
fires in the Ashland district. V. T.
Grieve, slate supervising lire warden
for Jackson county, said today that
a large force worked all night in get
ling control of a menacing fire in the
Big Unite district.

TO CHIEF OF PARKS
lloraco M. Albright, acting direc
tor ot the National Park Service, will
arrive in Medfor&V Wednesday morn
ing on his way to Crater Lake. Mr.
Albright has been In the Interior de
partment at Washington for many
years and has been identified with
that branch that has to do particular
ly with national parks. When con
gress created the National Park serv
ice as a separate bureau, Stephen T.
Mather was selected as director ,and
ut once chose Mr. Albright ns' bis as
sistant. At this time Mr. Mather is in
poor health, so Mr. Albright Is tour
ing the parks to study their needs nnd
to provide ways and means to Improve
