act wisely and save himself or herself
unusual vexation by telephoning to
Ibo Southern Pacific depot and In
quiring whether tho wanted train Is
on time. Nearly all passenger trains
on tho Southern Pacific have been

cause of the unusually heavy freight
traffic. Nearly every passenger train
is delayed by being held up at stations
or on sidetracks to permit freight
trains to pass.

a speech following a luncheon In

S. S. Fluhart, president of the Uni
ted Copper Company mine, located In
the northwestern part of the county,
left this morning for Seattle on a
business mission connected with the
company's affairs. Dr. R. M. Leezer,
president of the company, who was
bore In attendance at a conference on
mine affairs, returned to the mine to
day, as did Mr. Thrasher, the mine's
expert. B. 33. Fluhart, secretary of
the company, who also attended the
conference, will remain In the city
for several days. Much Improvement
work Is planned for the mine, In
cluding a survey for a road on which
to haul the ore.

Circuit Judge Calkins is holding
court at Grants Pass today. All af
fairs before the court In this county
will be cleaned up by Wednesday,
when Judge Calkins leaves on his six
weeks vacation which will be spent In
the East.
Edgar Hafer returned to the city
today from Portland where he spent
the past two weeks on business.
F. L. Coleman, deputy county clerk,
returned today from a week's visit at
Portland, and will be back In his po
sition at the court house tomorrow.
I. D. Taylor of Sheridan, Wyom
ing, Is spending sovcral days in the
city on business.
Itlchard D. Smythe and family re
turned to the city yesterday from an
an auto trip up towards Crater Lake.
Mr. Smythe reports that he was able
to run the car as far as Whisky creek
and that up to that point the road
was in good condition, and looked to
be so from there as far as he could
see ahead. He says that the snow Is
melting fast, that the weather Is very
worm up In that territory, and that
Indications are that soon cars can be
run to Crater Lake.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Godwin end
children, of Vernon, B. C, who have
spent the past five weeks in Medford
and vicinity, left today for Hood Riv
er to study conditions In' that section.
They like Medford and the valley and
may returno here.
Ben C. Beekman of Portland has
arrived for a visit with relatives at
Jacksonville.
ARSONISTS ESCAPE

The end of tho famous Ashland ar
son case came Saturday afternoon
when Judgo F. M. Calkins in circuit
court sentenced Mrs. Nan L. Strick-
fadden and Mrs. L. Droyfoos, her sis
ter, to from three to five years In the
state ponltcntiary, and to pay the ex
penses of tho state, nmounting to
$500 In tho trial of Mrs. M. M. Gar
wood.
Howovor, the two women will not
have to servo their sentences In pris
on as Judgo F. M. Calkins paroled
them to the charge of the penitentiary
parole officer at Salem, in whose cus
tody they will bo until pardoned or
roloased. They left for Salem last
night on their own recognizance to
report to tho parole officer.
Tho two women, It will ihe remem
bered, when their trial was called In
circuit court recontly, pleaded guilty
to the chargo of conspiracy to de
fraud nn Insurance company by at
tempting to burn down tho homo of
Mrs. Strlckfnddon In Ashland, nnd
then turned stnte's evldenco and testi
fied against Mrs. Garwood, when she
was placed on trial. They placed all
tho blamo for tho alleged conspiracy
on Mrs. Garwood. At Mrs. Garwood's
first trial tho jury was unable to
roach an agreement, and on her sec
ond trial the Jury acquitted her.
Mrs. Garwood will return to Seattlo
In a few days and again engage In tho
real estate business.
