tain E. J. Huelischer, of Portland, of.

Portland district will aid in securing
Canadian and British applicants for
the British and Canadian forces.

Information possible will he given to
applicants that may apply. A more
strict and closer physical examination
will be given each applicant to make
certain that he Is O. K. before for
warding hi in to Portland. Tho appli
cants will be treated in the same man
ner as the U. K. army applicants and
forwarded to this station at govern
ment expense.
"This order does not mean that you
are to stop recruiting for the I'. 8.
army. Keep up your work the same
as heretofore. Iot It lo known that
men can be acreptod for the British
army, but do not neglect your own
recruiting. Attend to both. Tako up
British recruiting as a side Issue. No
American citizen will be accepti-d for
the British or Canadian recruiting.

with a crate of strawberries which
had just been presented to him by
his father. On tho war front In
France tho Medford boy will prob
ably never encounter a warmer re
ception than he met with on the train.

Just as Hie Iratn was pulling out
Mr. Aitken handed the crate of straw
berries to Ralph, and the last seen
of the latter ho was surrounded by
a striiKnliiiK band of recruits. He
may have survived.

K. V. Carter is chairman of the
committee and Prof. IrviiiR Vining Is
campaign manager. A number of sub
committees have been appointed and
all are actively at work on a plan of
canvassing from house to house, the
effort being systematized as to mi
nute details. Superintendent Briscoe
of the public schools has charge of the
clerical work, assisted by stenograph
ers. The organization has roomy
headquarters in the(KlkH building.
As a preliminary, .Monday was ush
ered in with a picnic luncheon In
LHhia park. Ice cream, cake and cof
fee were on sale as a side line to help
the good cause along. Lunch was
followed by a formal program, and in
deference to these exercises, business
houses were closed from noon till 3
o'clock. There was music by the
band and vocal selections, also First
company went thru pome evolutions.
The main addresses were by E. B. Pi
per of Portland, and Prof. Vining of
this city. Tho proceeds of the picnic
were for the benefit of the local Ked
Crosa.
Teams to Va rivals.
On Tuesday morning eight or ten
teams of four persons each, will be
gin the active canvass, every detail
having a captain, whose specific du
ties and territory have been outlined
in advance. Every single resident
from Phoenix on the west to the Bar
ron ranches on the south will be per
sonally interviewed, and data will be
kept of all phases of the work as it
progresses. In the depot sections of
this city ladles will superintend tlie
canvassing. Inasmuch as the men are
away at their railroad work. No in
definite pledges will bo accepted dur
ing tho drive. Agreements must be
positive ones, and those inclined to
wards a negative response, if able to
contribute, will be labored with until
won over to n recognition of the mer
its of the Bed Cross crusade, which
will begin at 1 a. ni. daily, or earlier,
ami continue until : or 1 p. m.
In order to expedite tho work of
canvassing and allow a brief period
at the noon hour for rest and relaxa
tion, the work teams and clerical help
will dine at Elks hall. In tlie upstairs
banquet room on the following sched
ule, accommodation being reserved
for fifty workers:
