BIG CARNIVAL DELIGHTS
MANY ON OPENING DAY
U wns a real carnival night, with
all of its curnlvul features, noises,
KuletloH, music, fun and frolic. It
was a jolly night of entertainment
and of moro than usually Interesting
thrills nnd engrossing scenes. An
unusunlly Junta crowd thronged the
carnival grounds from early In the
evening until tho touts wore closed.
In addition to tho fait that tho
'Seventh company, C. A. C of 'Mod
ford, Ih putting on tho show for the
benefit of one of lis necessnry funds,
tho Foley & Durk shows presented nt
first an nttractlvo nppearanco, being
clean and orderly In all respects. A
noto of good humor nnd llght-heart-edness
was predominant throughout
tho cntlro ovenlng, tho oldor folks
seemingly enjoying themsolvos n
much as tho youngstors.
All of the booths woro well pntron
lzcd nnd thero are "somo" booths:
Todillo bears, dolls, sofa pillows, ntut
uary, kewples, nnd even darling little
work baskets and ukelnlcs wore
among tho prlr.es offered.
Tho concessions nro all nbovo those
of tho ordinary curnlvnl, from the
"Llltln Wild l'eoplo" to the miniature
dug and pony circus. Of unusual in
terest are the little Spanish twin girls
rivals of the famous Siamese twins.
Tho Nowlyweds aro clevor little
entertainers, as well as expert dan
cersand their baby, a youngster of
two and n half years, is almost a
match for his tiny parents.
Tho luorry-go-round nnd forrle
wheel proved tho mecea of delight fbr
tho young people nnd somo of the
older folks, as well.
Trlxle, the educated horse. Is a
wondor. It. knows Its program and
nsrumes poses without being prompt
ed by lis trainer.
A real thrill-producer Is "Ren
llenn," who uppenrs on n trapese sus
pended 40 feet In niltl-nlr. With only
tho blue canopy above and not much
sawdust below, this intrepid aerlulist
creates repeated heart-throbs, not the
least thrilling of which Is bis com
plete summersault on the swinging
trapese while seated in a chair blind
folded. The carnival Is, in fact, the best
that ever appeared In Medford. Its
concessions aro all class A shows,
each of Its Ui ml : nnd the personnel of
the combined shows is mueh above
tho average.

POOR DEMOCRACY.
W.K I1AYI0 actual conscription of men hut no con
scription of wealth. While the poor are registering
Jor tiieir country 'h service to give Iheir life ll necessary,
congress is placing upon them the additional burden of the
cost of the war.
The rich arc best able to pay for the war to which the
poor give their life, hut the senate is lifting the burden
from their shoulders and placing it upon the poor.
The senate lias altered the house war taxation bill so
that one-quarter, instead of one-half of the war's cost
will be raised hy taxation; so that the profits and incomes
of the rich will continue to pay for their luxuries while
the pennies of the poor will fall farther short of buying
ill l- n Jjcccnnn HT5.
Taxes on large incomes are reduced 25 per cent by
the senate and the sugar, coffee and tea used by the poor
must make up the deficit. Excess profit taxes, small
enough in the house bill as compared to Great Britain's
levies, are cut still smaller, so that business mav swell and
swell profits. Decreases in the income and profit taxes
amount to one billion left in the coffers of the rich while
the poor pay higher prices for food and clothing.
Enormous incomes are lelt intact, bv the senate. No
increase in inheritance taxes js provided. Jewelry and
other luxuries are overlooked but necessities soaked.
The men with the little income are not forgotten
married men with $2000 and single men with $1000 must
pay and they make no complaint. JJut big inheritances,
and men with incomes over $100,000, and those who have
made fortunes out of war munitions, raise a. howl and es
cape with comparatively small assessments.
President "Wilson states that this is a "war for de
mocracy" but the senate is crippling democracy by con
scripting life and not property, it is not the democracy
practiced in France or in Britain wealth there has been
conscripted along with life. It is not the democracy nec
essary to win a great war. All the people must do their
share. There is nothing sacred about wealth to exempt
it. There is no fortune that cannot, be recreated by labor
while a life destroyed, is a life gone forever.
"While we are crushing autocracy, we must also smash
plutocracy. Wealth must fight along with poverty. De
mocracy must rule all things.
