WASHINGTON-. May 31. Thru
out America the plain people are do
ini! all they can to solve the food
problem, but here In Washington,
where the great problem of food dis
tribution and control must be solved,
I find members of house and senate,
aided by a swarm of special food in
terest lobbyists doing all they can
to block the administration efforts
to feed America and our allies.
This is my observation after a tour
of the vital food centers of the na
tion for the Mail Tribune.
These small minded men in Wash
ington are determined to bind Hoover
Jand and foot, just as the Lilliputians
lied down Gulliver. They are ready
to see the people starve before they
will consent to yield their petty pri
vate interests.
The big flour mllers have their
lobbyists here to see that nothing is
done that may affect their "brands,"
for the establishment of which the
people have for years paid high prices
to cover lavish advertising costs.
Bakers are here in droves resolved
no action shall be taken to interfere
with their profits. They will have no
hesitation in blocking the entire food
control program to save themselves
a few dollars.
The packers, so far as I have dis
covered, are not openly represented
but their infuence is surely exerted.
Brewers are here in force, deter
mined to block any food measures
that threaten their industry.
The distillers have anarmy here
hlgh-rriced "accelerators of public
opinion."
These are only a few of the special
inijerests here blocking every attempt
fo,nopular utilization and equitable
distribution of foodstuffs.
Each of these special interests has
its "experts" ready to swear to any
thing their bosses direct. There are
"experts" here testifying under oath
that whole wheat bread Is deadly
poison, and that any bread not made
of bleached flour Is a menace to the
nation.
All this "expert testimony" Is
bought and paid for at so much per
day.
And In addition to this swarm of
lobbyists all the old-time food adul
terators are on the job seeking to
put jokers into the food control bills,
which will wipe out the .pure food
laws and leave them free to poison
America's children.
There Is just one way to solve the
problem of famine prices and food
manipulation make the food profit
eers and speculators get off the backs
of the people. This is what the food
control bills are intended to accom
plish. If thoy continue to be blocked or
if congress is permitted to dawdle
iJlong another two months while the
robery and exploitation of the peo
ple's food continues, there is sure
to be grave trouble and tho progress
of the war against Germany will be
seriously menaced.
WASHINGTON', May 31. Perfect
ing of the second administration food
bill began In the house agriculture
mlttee today with a view of pas
sage in tho house by Juno 15 if pos
sible. Meantime the senate is debat
ing the first bill, already passed by
the house, which provides for a food
survey and activities to stimulate pro
ductions and conserve foodstuffs.
Urged strongly by the president,
Secretary Houston and Horbort C.
Hoover, the bill sets up a complete
machinery for full control of food
supply and distribution. It would
prevent hoarding, speculation and
monopoly of foodstuffs, authorize
standardization of all food products
and provide regulation of grain going
Into manufacture of beer or whisky,
or complete prohibition of such use in
the president's discretion. It provides
a guarantee to the farmer of a mini
mum price for his products and also
provides that to break up a corner or
prevent extortion a maximum price
may be fixed, this maximum, however
not applying to the farmer. A fight
in the house is said tb be likely over
the minimum and maximum pro
vision. In extreme casos the government
would be empowered to take over and
operate storage plants, warehouses,
elevators, packing concerns and fac
tories, and mines as well.
Tho bill gives the president abso
lute power to exercise the authority
rrovided In the bill thru such agencies
as he may name.

NEW YORK, May 31. Represen
tative London, the socialist congress- j
man, speaking of the Stockholm peace i
conference at the conference relations
last night, said it was true that the
meeting was arranged in Germany,
but added he did not "blame them for
trying to secure peace."
"I would like to see a conference of
honest men come together," he said,
"whether It be in Stockholm, Petro
grad or nny other place, particularly
now, when It is so essential to help
along the struggle for democracy. Of
course, it would be improper for mo
to say a word of criticism of tho ro-
I fusal of our state department to let
three Americans go to Stockholm, but
I would talk peace with the dlvel
hlmsolf, It I might bring peace about.
Let us not become leaders of reaction.
I mentioned Petrogrnd. The social
ists of America should go to that
great land of sorrow Russia and
say to the Russian socialists, 'stand
together,' 'hold out a little longer,
fight on, we will settle this horrible
strugle and settle It on terms which
will Insuro universal peace' "
Ignaclo Calderon, ministher from

immoral and unconstitutional at the

cifists in attendance.' The speaker
was Daniel Kiefcr of Cincinnati, who
was introduced by Or. Judah U Ung
ues. Kicfer in his address advised ap
peal to' tlie courts "as the first duty
of a patriotic citizen who lias been
drafted."
"The conscript ion act,' ho said, "is
both immoral and unconstitutional. It
violates the prohibition against in
voluntary servitude. Not even the
hair splitting plea can be urged in the
present case that the thirteenth
amendment does not forbid national
defense. Sending conscripts to Eu
rope is not national defense, but mix
ing in tho quarrels of outside na
tions and if, ns is suggested, con
scripts can be compelled to work ns
farm hands, factory hands or in other
civil occupations, tho thirteenth
amendment is not worth the paper it
is written on."
Keifcr said it was not n question
of a citizen's duty to defend the coun
try, ns such a situation 'does not
confront us." lie declared the Unit
ed States was at war, because "cer
tain persons with authority wish to
have us at war regardless of neces
sity or of popular wishes; otherwise
there would have been a referendum
on war and conscription."

THE slice of toast that is made on your modem gas range is
pretty good. But do you remember when they made it over the
coals of the kitchen stove, with a long toasting fork? Browned just
right, crisp, and buttered hot. Those were the days.
We've gone right back to this fine, simple old idea to make
Lucky Strike, the real Burley cigarette.- Yes, sir I The tobacco
it's toasted.
We made this discovery after five years of experiment. Before
this you couldn't have a ready-made Burley cigarette; flavor wouldn't
hold. And you certainly wanted it; look at the sixty million pounds
of Burley you poured out of those green, red and blue tin boxes
last year. "Blame good tobacco I "
So now go to it; Lucky Strike Cigarettes; delicious, toasted Burley..
It's a new flavor you'll enjoy the idea of the buttered toast.

continuous chain of boiling points. Low boiling
points for easy starting, medium boiling points

boiling points for power and mileage.
Red Crown is a straight - distilled gasoline. 1
Hence there's a continuous chain of boiling
points, gradually rising from low to high.
Mixtures cannot have a continuous chain of
boiling points. That's why mixtures cannot be
as good motor fuel as pure straight-run gaso
line. And that's also why the gravity test for
gasoline is worthless gravity tells nothing at
all about boiling points, the only real test of
gasoline quality.
