MEMORIAL DAY.
FOIf Ihe second lime, Memorial clay sees the American
republic enaed in a war to benefit humanity.
For the second lime, while the heroes who wore the
blue or the gray in 1M1 are passing in ever diminishing re
view, other heroes, their sons ami grandson's, are marching
off to rededieate m liberty's name the nation that was sav
ed for freedom by Grant at Appomattox.
Nineteen years ago it was bleeding ( 'uba for whose sake
young Americans donned the uniform and sallied forth to
oust the oppressor.
Today our sympathies nre
war by the Kiilf ermgs or Belgium, Senna, roland, .Monte
negro and the dangers of France and all democracy.
Herein lies our pledge to the brave men of '(il that their
heritage has not been forgotten; that Americans today, as
then, stand ready to lay down their lives for an ideal.
How their hearts must thrill as thev inarch today, be
hind the fife and drum, through the flag-decked streets,
in the knowledge that other men are taking up their bur
den, and are preparing to sacrifice their lives, if need bo,
that the republic may insure for the future years, peace
without dishonor.
What sorrow must mix with their pride as they realize
that, though their steps will soon cease forever, gener
ations to come will continue the beautiful custom fit' Me
morial dav, and ever thinning ranks will wear, not the
blue of lH(il, but the olive drab of 1017!

Cutworms and slujrs nre making
their appearance in truck gardens and
in the fields and have been reported
as having done considerable damuge
in some places. The army worm
which is .similar in its habits to the
cut worm is nlso due to appear at
most any time. The cut worm does
his work lit night and in the day time
remniiiK in the ground. The injury
done hy cut worms consists in cutting
off the young plants just us they
push through the ground just below
or just above the surf:u'e of the
ground. They attack most all truck
crops and will nlso climb fruit trees
cutting- off the fruit stems. The slugs
attack most all truck crops feodin
at the surface of the ground.
Formula of l'oison.
Control: Tho method of control for
all of the above pests is the poison
bran mush which when proiery pre
pared and applied is preferred to the
vegetation upon which they feed: It
is prepared ns follows;
Ilran !)0 lbs.
White- arsenic I "
Salt 1 "
Lemon exlract 2 o.'.s.
Water to make a coarse crumbly
mash.
The dry ingredients should be mix
ed thoroughly and water and lemon
extract added. The material should
not be sloppy; tub just enough wuter
so that it will fall npurt readily in
the hand after pressing together.
For use in small home gardens it
should be placed in small heups close
to the newly set plants. Where it is
used on a large scnle 15 pounds per
acre brondeasted is sufficient. It
should break into small flakes when
broadcasting, n few falling near each
plant. When mixing up the full for
mula the cost would be between 4 nnd
S cents per pound, but smnll' iiunn-
tities would come higher. This office
hns deemed it advisable to mix up n
(piiinlily of the dry ingredients and
selling it at cost to those wishing it
on the snme plan of the squirrel pois
on. It would not be practicable to
add the water ninoe it would dry out
upon standing, hence this would be
left for the users:
Furnished by Pathologist.
This offer should nppeal to those
who need but n small quantity, lie
sure to bring a bottie in which to take
the lemon extract. This material
can be obtained at the office of the
County Pathologist. This mush is
to he applied in the evening.
Cubbnge worms: Feeds on the cab
bage and allied plants and when left
alone will often do much damage.
Control: 1 r tuhlcspoonsful ot ar
senate of lend paste to 1 gallon of
water or 1 tublcspoouful of arsen
ate of lead powder in one gallon of
water of sifted wood ashes or dust 8
parts and one part powdered arsen
ate of lead. The first two mixtures
nre applied with a liquid sprayer of
some typo while the latter is applied
with a dust gun or cloth hag.
Aphis: Aphis often becomes de
structive but are easily controlled by
spraying with nicotine sulphate !( to
Hll drops lo 1 quart of water or I
tuhlcspoonsful to n gallon of water. A
little .soap udded to the wuter will net
us a spreader mid sticker.
Wirewornis: It is now too bile lo
do any effective work against the
wirowonn. The best that can be done
is to pull dying plants and kill the
worms found in them.

' PETROGItAI), May 30. The con
gress of delegates from the front, af
ter a debate on the war, has unani
mously,, voted the following resolu
tion: First, the army in the trenches de
clares that It Is indispensable to take
every measure to put an end as quick
ly as possible to the International car
nage and conclude peace without an
nexations or indemnities, on the basis
of the right of all nations to dispose
of themselves, proclaiming at the
same time the watchword, "Who ever
wishes for peace must prepare for
war."
Second, the army, pointing out that
the Russian soldiers have been fight
ing hitherto under conditions infi
nitely worse than those of the allies,
that the Russian soldier has had to
march almost unprotected against the
enemy's bullets and break with uaro
arms the barbed wire entanglements
which the allies and the enemy pass
freely after artillery preparation, de
clares that tho Russian froiit must be
provided with munitions and every
thing necessary to maintain the prin
ciple, "the more metal, the less gun
fodder."
In conclusion the congress declares
that the army appeals tn all to whom
free Russia Is dear to rally around the
council of soldiers' and workmen's
delegates and the provisional govern
ment and not to permit "adventurers
to let the army became manure for
foreign fields."
