UK KNOWS HOW,
Thomas Morrimmi, the well known
blacksmith who enlisted in t he nuvtil
resent' some weeks ivjo nnd n week
later wuk summoned to the eolnr.s. r
tnrneU to Medford Thursday with
his family after a month's absence
at Hremcrton, with an honorable dis
charge from the service. Mr. Merri
tiian enlisted for industrial duty us
a blacksmith, in class four of the
naval reserves, hut found on his ar
rival nt llreaierton, that there was no
blacksmithiiii!; to lie done, what there
was was under civil service, and that
instead of beinjr assigned to shore
duty, he was to be transferred to
class 2 of tho reserves and sent
aboard n warship. A protest to the
commandant brought hi release.
"There have been wild tales in cir
culation about me," stated Mr. Merri
rnan. "J never was in the ijuard
house, as reported, never had any
troiiblo with anyone in the service,
and never was sent to McNeil island.
As far as I know (he Medford con
tingent bus been in no trouble, though
those of us who were wantonly de
ceived by the enlisting officer, arc
out considerable money, as n reward
for nur patriotism. We were iven
honorable discharges from the ser
vice because the employment for
which we volunteered, did not exist.
"I signed up for industrial duty, to
work in the navy yards, to relieve the
enlisted men, 1 was to receive a sal
ary of $00. r0 u month, $12 u year
retainer to keep the commandant in
formed of my .address, and to serve
in war time at my trade, the service
to he industrial instead of military.
The government was to furnish a four
room cottage for my family and I
was to have the privilege of baying
my groceries and supplies at cost at'
the commissary, and that the govern
ment would make provision for de
pendents. I found on arrival at
Bremerton that there was no black-
smithing to he done, except that tin
ier the civil service rules, no cot
tages for use of families of recruits,
and that no one iu the reserve could
Imv at the commissary. J found that
instead of, $110.50 a month my pay
was to be iff) 5 and no support for
lependents. .
"I had been told by Rio recruittug
officers that being on industrial duty,
f would not have to wear u uniform-
but they wanted to put a uniform on
me, put me aboard ship and use me
in military service, instead of indus
trial. When I explained matters to
the comiunudaut, he recommended my
lischarge and here I am."

RECEPTION GIVEN
The reception held at the Hotel
Holland last night for the visiting
delegates to the good roads conven
tion was an enjoyable affair. The
hotel parlors were beautifully deco
rated with white and purple lilacs and
Medford's usual hospitality was very
pronounced.
The ladies In charge and the good
roads committee wish to thank Miss
Ruth Warner, Miss Brault, Mrs. Ber
tha Kmcrick, Mrs. Uuy Chlldcrs and
Mrs. Stephen ( formerly Veneta Ham
ilton) for the splendid musical pro
gram which contributed so largely to
tho evening's success. Mrs. George
Andrews was the accompanist aud
playod in her usual finished style.
Mrs. Charles Schleffelln outlined
the usual procedure for a campaign
as carried on by the ladies and sug
gested an organization for that pur
pose, proving by past experiences
wherein the ladies have succeeded for
some measure they were particularly
anxious for that this was only way
to carry the good roads bond issue.
Mayor C. K. Gates followed with a
talk, favoring Mrs. Schieffulin'B plan,
and Mr. E. K. Gore closed the even
ing's 'program by approving of the
former speaker's plan and paying the
ladies a spclndid compliment and re
ferring to their success in all things
they undertake.
