LEAKY FAUCETS
Ilceause of the unexpected coming
enormous consumption of water in
Medford to irrigate the increased
acreage in gardens and lots incidental
to the war food preparedness cam
paign, the people of Medford nro
warned to have ull leaky faucets in
and outside their homes repaired nt
once, under penalty of having the
water shut off from their homes.
Olin Arnspiger, city water superin
tendent, is planning to conserve the
city s water supply- nnd make it go
as far ns posible in hot weather,
and nnonunccs thnt probably the
most rigid irrigating restrictions ever
known in Hie city will bo enforced
during t lie hot season. Water con
sumption for the gardens and lots
will bo given the right, of way nnd
if there is not enough water during
the heated spell to take care of botli
them and the city's lawns, then water
consumption for the lawns will be
greatly curtailed.
Unusual efforts will be made to pre
vent nny wnter wastage this sum
mer, us even in ordinary vears there
has been u shortage of water durin;
the heated spell. Hut the tax on the
water system this summer will be far
greater because of the irrigation nec
es.surv for the increased number of
preparedness gardens and lots.
'"The wilier system was only de
signed for n. per capita consumption
of 200 gallons per dny," sand Kupt.
Arnspiger, on Monday,. "In past
years ut times it has jumped during
the summer to COO gallons per capita.
In ordinary weather the consumption
is only about one-tenih of the water
passing through the pipes, but m very
hot weather ut times not only was
all the water passing through the
pities used, but in addition the res
ervoir was drawn upon and lowered
seven feet a day.
"The water system was never dc
signed ns an irrigating system," so
you sec we've got to be very careful
this summer, stop every lenk and en
force rules to prevent waste to the
letler.
"Inside the city limits nre 1,717
acres of land and it is estimated
Hint between 5(10 and COO acres of
it is in gardens and lots.'
