eatables to cheer the young recruits
on their way to the Mare Island navy
training station at San Francisco,
passed them other recruits on the
train.
Frank Manpiess of Heagle, who en
listed nt the same time as the other
boys, was n happy lad, for be was the
only one of the four fo pass the phys
ical test.

Quartermaster Xortsrom, head of the
local navy recruiting station, as be
heard the news of the boys' rejec
tion. Then be hurried away from
the depot, as he, too, was disappoint
ed. "Those boys looked good to nte,"
said Nortsrom.

entire ninth grade class of Washing
ton school , in charge of their teach
er, Miss Ihtrbee, to do honor to (Iil
hert Blackburn, who was a member
of the, class when he enlisted.

naval recruits had been raised to 17
from 1(1 years. Norstrom thinks that
the hoys were rejected more because
of their age, than for physical de

by Vice Admiral Capelle, minister of
the navy, to the Reichstag main com
mittee. An official note regarding the
minister's communication was given
