MEDFORD MATCi TRTBtTNE MEDFORD, OREflOX. TUESDAY. APRTL 17. 1917 PAGE THREE RAIDER KARLSRUHE NOVEMBER 4.1914 SAN JUAN, Porto Rico, April 17 What is believed to be the first au thentic account of the cruiser Kals rune, which was active In the waters of the Carribeau and off the coast of Brazil during the first months of the war, was given this week by Captain Henrlch Lublnus, former prize officer on the Karlsruhe, and who brought the Qerman prize KD-111 Into this port In January, 1915. Tho KD-111 was formerly the British freighter Fame and was captured October 5 1914. The Karlsruhe was sunk following an accidental explosion on November 4, 1914, not far from the island of Vi-inidad, according to Captain Lu blnus, who said that he had only re cently received this information direct from one of the surviving officers of the cruiser. This statement gives confirmation to reports from Trinidad about that time saying that a life preserver and portions of wreckage believed to have come from the Karlsruhe had -been picked up there. According to Captain Lublnus, Cap tain Kohler, commander of the Karls ruhe, several of the officers and more than 100 men lost their lives when the cruiser went down. SIGHS FOR PEACE BERLIN, April 17. Emperor Charles of Austria is quoted By Bjorn Bjorson as saying in an Interview at Luxemburg near Vienna: "I believe I know war better than most of the men who are at the head of the enemy powers today. I know jiot only the financial and economic effect of war but I know what it means to die In the trenches. I have lived a long time In the field and have seen men fall and die at my feet Therefore I know also, better maybe, , than any other emperor or king what peace means." PEACE EFFORTS 10 BE RENEWED BY I! KARMALA GAVE U-BOAT BATTLE THE HAGUE, April 17. Interna tional Socialist circles are gratified at the latest news from Russia, ac cording to which the new regime Is becoming firmly established with the power of the socialist extremists very small compared to that of those who favor a lasting rather than a patched up peace. A reserved attitude Is adopted In regard to the expected fruits of the conference which It de cided to call at Stockholm, but the International socialists are keenly anxious to miss no chance of making their Influence felt In the eventual reorganization of Europe. No program was drawn for tho conference but a sharp conflict of opinion is likely to develop. The Dutch delegates themselves are di vided between the standpoint of the Russian Minister of Justice M. Ker ensky and President Wilson's peace program. In the meanwhile pacifist circles at The Hague are active and an executive meeting of the big antl war council has been called for to morrow to consider among other things the possible dispatch of depu tatlons to the capitals of central 'pow ers. The Dutch pacifists are apparently Inclined to urge that the central pow ers make clear that they are aiming at peace with the entire entente rath er than a separate peace with Russia They are also agreed that It Is desir able that the central powers publish their peace terms. by XEW YORK, April 17.
