COPPERHEADS.
AS OXK of tlio six-senators opposing the jidoption of the
war rcsoliitoii, Senator JJarry Lane represented only
himself and the few Germans among ns. He did not rep
resent Oregon or the people of Oregon and should resign.
His vote shows that he is true to form and can he counted
upon as the friend of the enemy.
liinig familiarity with his vagaries has bred contempt
for Harry Lane in Oregon, hut. the unpatriotic spectacle
made of himself hy Senator LaFollette has surprised and
shocked the many former admirers of the Wisconsin re
former, who has committed political hara-kiri by assum
ing the leadership of the modern copperheads.
LaFollette 's peace speech consisted of a partisan de
fense of German barbarism and atrocity, a justification of
the war she is waging upon America, a deinogogic twist
ing of the British lion's tail and a prejudiced and jaun
diced assault upon the president, and upon the policy of
the United States.
Whatever prospects of political preferment 'La Follette
as a progressive, leader, they have gone glimmering. Loy
may have had its a. progressive leader, they have gone glim
mering. Loyalty to one's own country is the first requisite
in a statesman and LaFollette has been 'weighed .and
found wanting.
VERMONT SHOWS THE WAY.
SO FA It as numbers go, Vermont is a small state
:(i(),000 people. ,Only six states in the union have fewer.
Hut the governor oi this trim, fighting little bantam
has asked the legislature for 1,000,000 that Vermont may
bear "more than its share" of the duty of national defense.
No other state, not even those ten times as big, have
appropriated more.- In projiorton to population Vermont,
has far outclassed all the rest. -
"We always have done more than our share, you
know," says the governor, with simple pride. The record
says so, and it begins with Fthen Allen and some of Stark's
men and runs straight, fine and true American all the way
down.
"More than our share." That's a good word. "More
than our share," says Vermont and makes no fuss about it,
but starts in to do it. If all the rest of us had the saint! reso
lute, ungrudging, ready-to-serve spirit, how long would
the old beast of Prussian autocracy survive to curse the
world? Sixty days'?
Anyway, salute little old Vermont! Old and always
young! The governor says it believes in action, not in
words. Then salute it again! Salute anybody that holds
such a doctrine and gets busy on it.

HOME, April 5. The world's food
crop Ib deficient and the situation Is
becoming alarming to lluvld Lubln,
American representative of the Inter
national Institute of Agriculture. Mr.
I.uliln Is here to report facts to Presi
dent Wilson through Ambassador
Page and l iii'sing the Imperative
necessity of a mobilization of Ameri
can agricultural resources. In the
report to the Associated Press, Mr.
I.ubln said:
"For tho first time in many years
there exists a deficit in the supply of
corn, wheat, rye, barley and oats, es
timated at a total of 130,000,000
bushels less than the normal require
ments for countries open to trade.
Tho situation is worse than was ex
pected last October. The institute's
reports Indicated then a surplus of
more than enough to feed the world
until August of this yeur when the
new crops begin to come In.
"We must profit by Europe's ex
perience Jieforo meal tickets become
necessary. i
"Wo can eliminate high prices by
curtailing waste, by growing more
foodstuffs and by conserving our sup
ply which is more Important than
getting men Into the army.
"Two months after the beginning
of tho war Germany forbade the use
of wheat or rye for feeding livestock
and two months later requlstloncd all
supplies of food. Our first duty Is to
prevent the. manipulation of food sup
plies, thus obtaining an effective moy
bllizatlon through the samo plan as
tho Germans, tho substance of which
Is om'bodled In senate bill 5973."
PARIS. April 5. "We all have that
feeling that something great, surpass
ing the proportions of a political
event, has just been accomplished,"
said 'Premier Ribot In an address to
day in the chamber of deputies. "En
trance Into the war with us of tho
most pacific democrat country in the
world is a historic fact without
eriual."
The premier's address was delivered
in tho presence of William G. Sharp,
tho American ambassador, and tho
other members .of the diplomatic
corps. The ministerial benches and
members seats wero filled and the
galleries were crowded.
. "After having done everything to
demonstrate to us its attachment to
peace," M. Ribot continued, "the
American nation solemnly declares It
cannot remuln neutral in tills great
conflict between right and violence,
between civilization and barbarism."

An niijrur for the success of tin.'
recruiting invasion of Kittle Point to
day by members of the Seventh I'mii
pnny mid of the veterans' association
was given Wednesday night, when
two young men of: Kngle lint, Hub
ert K. L. Ilarnisli and Frank V.
Ila.ulton, appeared at the recruiting
headquarters on JIain street and en
rolled in the local company.
A large number of recruits are ex
pected to be gathered in on the visit
today. The probability of conscrip
tion in the near future will play an
important part in the minds of local
young men, who will enlist, rather
than wear the of the conscripted
