PUKiia.M) papers pronounced M-nator Harry Jane s
efforts to reveiit the president from iein empower
ed to protect American rights at sea, as most unpatriotj
The same papers, however, are selling their space to
the liernian propaganda in its 1 mal el lort to divide the na
fion and prevent action by congress to protect American
rights.
Lane probably acted from conscientious motives the
sole motive of the newspapers is pursuit of the dollar. Of
the two, thev arc more to be censured than the senator.
The Portland Journal and the Portland Telegram Fri
day night carried lull page appeals Irom the " iMiiergency
Peace Federation" of .New York urging people of the west
to wire the president and congress protesting the taking of
any action to protect American lives and property.
If Tarty Lane and his eleven companions who, in the
words of the, president "rendered the great government of
the United States helpless and contemptible" before the
world, what can be said for these newspapers, which for a
few paltry. dollars, lend their columns to the Cierinan prop
aganda to keep the country "Helpless and contemptible
so that the brutal murder of Americans may continue and
the nation take its orders ironi t he Prussian lugger?
"Why should these journals protest treasonable utter
ances til the bought and paid lor hypenated press, when
they, themselves, for a miserable pittance, aid and abet the
same program.
. AVhal kind of patriots are Ihey when they joint the
ranks of the kept press of the kaiser, in an effort to make
America helpless and impotent'?
Similar advertisements have appeared or are appear
nig in all the large papers of the country, whose pocket
nooks ont-weigli their patriotism. Jt is part and parcel ot
the joint campaign being waged by Aniercan pacifism and
i'russian militarism.
Who is paying for these advertisements? "Who is pay
ing to keep the powerful peace lobby at Washington? Who
is paying for the franl it; "drive" to be made upon congress
Who pays the piper
national humiliation
Mondav in the interests of neacc?
for these strange tunes in behalf
and surrender?
The question is easil v answered. Who has paid all alontr
for the propaganda to divide the American nation in the
face of German aggression? Who paid for the destruc
tion of our munition plants I Who paid for the campaign
igainst the export ot munitions, and the agitation for an
embargo on food? All have been traced directly to the
doors of the German embassy at Washington and investi
gation will probably prove that the hune'reds of thousands
now being spent in the final drive to manufacture public
opinion through newspaper advertising, comes from Ger
man agents ot the imperial exchequer.
Ju printing these advertisements, the Portland press
arouses the suspicion that their patriotism is on a coninicr-
lal basis. I hey do much to coin inn the world's opinion
that Americans place the dollar above national honor.

Tho first part of tho performance
is a series of the most perplexing, as
tounding and wholly mystifying and
entertaining feats of magic, illusion

The second part of the perform

The Stage Coach Was Useful
In the early fifties when men traveled across the continent to
plant new cities and towns, they..found the stage-coach a very
useful means of transportation.
The cities grew and thrived, the railways came and the stage-coach
disappeared. The people wanted a way to get from place to place
quickly, and the locomotive provided it.
To the early settlers of this land,
tallow caudles, dipped laboriously by'
hand, were good enough until some
thing belter came along. And just ns
the railways brought better transpor
tation, the electric light has brought
belter lighting nnd the old methods
are f,i-t disappearing.
Tlirouuli the enterprise of central sta-tti-n
lighting and power companies
now located in nearly every city, ham
let, larye and small, from coast to
const, electric lighting in its perfect

the companies have consistently an

What this company lias accomplish

schools, the hospitals, the banks, even
the churches in ministering to the
public food. Indeed there is no side
of public welfare that has not been

electric service.
